Elements of English Grammar
• Phonemes-smallest units of speech distinguishing one word (or word
element) from another
• Phonology-study of the patterns of sounds in a language and across
languages (e.g. element p in “tap,” which separates that word from “tab,”
“tag,” and “tan.”)
• Morphemes-comprised of two separate classes called (a) bases (or roots)
and (b) affixes (e.g. develop+ment and book+ed)

• Morphology- the study of how parts of words, called morphemes, create


different meanings by combining with each other or standing alone.
• Syntax-arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences
in a language.
