W H AT I S S I M P L E PA S T ?
Simple past is an action that occurred in the past and was terminated in it. We use the auxiliar verb DID

For example: I traveled for Switzerland last week


We didn’t the homework
She had a dream yesterday

STRUCTURE
Subject + verb + complement

Affirmative form
1. If the verb regular end in E, we
just add D at the end.

Example: I lied to you

2. Verbs ending in consonant +


vowel + consonant, double the
consonant and add ED.

Example: She planned her day


Affirmative form
3. If the verb end in Y preceded by
a vowel, just add ED

Example: The kids played last


weekend

4. When the verb end in Y preceded


by a consonant, cut the Y and add
IED

Example: We studied last night


Negative form

In the negative form, it’s necessary add the


auxiliar did+not/didn’t. The main negative
verb is not conjugated in the past, as the
auxiliary already indicates that the sentence is
in the negative form

Subject + did + not + main verb +


complement

Example: She didn’t like potatoes

I didn’t break your glasses


Interrogative form
Sentences interrogatives, the
auxiliar DID, comes before the
subject.

Did + subject + main verb + complement

Example: Did your parents die last month?

Did you like animes?


IRREGULAR VERBS
Irregular verbs do not have specific
rules, we can only learn in practice.

Example: broke/ break

send/ sent
