DIFFERENT CULTURES
LEARN ABOUT IT💡
A “text” isn’t limited to something written down. A text can be a film, an artifact,
anything in a language and culture that conveys meaning. Think about the text that you
use in your language classroom: what’s in the textbook? What do you read in class or
even at home? How do you describe the classroom, its design? Why do you think the
chairs are placed facing the tables? Those questions, with its finite answer would tell
you that there are texts that are reflection of one’s own culture.
Categorization of Text

HOW TO EVALUATE MESSAGES AND IMAGES OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF
TEXTS REFLECTING DIFFERENT CULTURE?
Formal and informal language serve different purposes in written communications depending on the
reader (Audience) and reason for writing (Purpose). The tone, the choice of words and the way the words
are put together vary between the two different styles.
Formal language is less personal than informal language. It is used when writing for professional or
academic purposes like graduate school assignments. Formal language does not use colloquialisms,
contractions or first-person pronouns such as “I” or “We.”
Informal language is more casual and spontaneous. It is used when communicating with friends or family
either in writing or in conversation. It is used when writing personal emails, text messages and in some
business correspondence. The tone of informal language is more personal than formal language.
