Introduction

In this project, we will build a night light circuit using a NAND gate chip.
A night light circuit is a circuit in which a light will turn on when the
environment becomes dark. It is a popular commercial product that is
used in many places such as for backyard lights for when it gets dark for
automatic illumination.

Automatic night lamp as the name suggests is for turning ON and OFF
the lamp automatically without the need of human interventions. It senses
the light intensity from surroundings and find whether its day or night.
And it automatically turns ON when the surrounding is dark and it turns
OFF when it receives light from surroundings. A sensor called LDR is
used to detect the light intensity. This project finds wide outdoor
applications in streets, gardens and public places where it finds difficulty
to appoint a person to operate the lights.

Breadboard

A breadboard is a rectangular board with many mounting holes. They

are used for creating electrical connections between electronic
components and single board computers or microcontrollers such as
Arduino and Raspberry Pi. The connections aren't permanent and they
can be removed and placed again.

7400 IC or NAND Gate

7400 IC or NAND Gate: In digital electronics, a NAND gate (NOT-

AND) is a logic gate which produces an output which is false only if all
its inputs are true; thus its output is complement to that of an AND gate.
A LOW (0) output results only if all the inputs to the gate are HIGH (1);
if any input is LOW (0), a HIGH (1) output results.

A NAND gate is made using transistors and junction diodes. By De

Morgan's laws, a two-input NAND gate's logic may be expressed as
AB=A+B, making a NAND gate equivalent to inverters followed by an
OR gate.
Resistor

A resistor is an electrical component that limits or regulates

the flow of electrical current in an electronic circuit.
Resistors can also be used to provide a specific voltage for
an active device such as a transistor.

Connecting wires

Often, when building electronics projects, little thought

is given thought is given to the connecting wire. While
it is possible to "get away with" almost anything for
many projects, it is sometimes necessary to connect
the various electronics components using the right
wire. For example it is often useful to use coloured
connecting wire to indicate such items as electronics
wire used for connecting the supplies, signals, and
grounds.

In this way it is easier to identify the different signals

and lines and this reduces the possibility of errors. In
addition to this it is sometimes necessary to have
connecting wire of a particular size to ensure the
connections are made in the right manner. If the wire
is too thick it may not be easy to accommodate in
some situations, whereas thicker wire may be needed
for higher currents of physical strength or robustness
in other situations.
Principle

The automatic light control system operates on 230v AC

supply . The automatic light controller has a
photoconductive device whose resistance changes
proportional to the extent of illumination , which switches
ON or OFF with the use of transistor as a switch .

Light dependent resistor , a photoconductive device has

been used as the transducer to convert light energy into
electical energy . The central dogma of the circuit is that the
change in voltage drop across the light dependent resistor
on illumination or darkness switches the transistor between
cut-off region or saturation region and switches OFF the light
.

Applications

• Simple Light Detector circuit can be used in many applications

like automatic switching of appliances up on detecting light ,
security systems etc.

• This circuit can be used in alarm system , where increasing

intensity of light will trigger the alarm .

• It can be used in cupboards or wordboards . When the door is

opened , the light will automatically turned on.
Working

• Photoresistors resistance changes in proportion to the amount of

light it is exposed to. In darkness , it has very high resistance . In
bright light , its resistance drops dramatically .

• If placed in avolltage divider circuit with a fixed resistor , we can

exploit this resistance altering behaviour so that when connected to
NAND gate , we can produce a logic HIGH output when the
photoresistor is exposed to bright light and a logic low output when
the photoresistor is exposed to darkness .
