To investigate diamond particles and their surface texture and how the
Aims abrasive performance can assist quality and efficiency

• To determine a practical approach to quantify grain shape, size, and

other physical properties
• Inspect image analysis and single grit grinding test using light
Objectives microscope
• To examine the influence of abrasive geometry on grinding
mechanism

Background research
Diamond is the hardest natural materials on earth having a high strength,
good wear resistance, and low friction coefficient
Low grinding force,
High wear high grinding
resistance efficiency

Experiment set-up on
CNC machine
• ABN 800 diamond on mild steel
• Work piece axis adjusted using angle platform and dial test indicator
• Adjusted to cut horizontal lines
• Anticlockwise grinding
• Force sensor and acoustic emission connected to work piece
• Spindle speed is 360 rpm.

Conclusion
The graph cut on the work piece has successfully matched the graph of the tip
The less the ploughing the more efficiency resulting in better surface finish
The deeper the cut the more the ploughing

What is next?
 5 types of powdered diamond should be further
investigated to examine the grit size, shape and other
physical properties.
 -Ploughing ratio graph will be represented in final report.
