material is either a plastic drum or fabricated metal or a
combination of the two. The plastic material has a maximum

(0.145m3) for the gasholder while the metal type material has a
capacity of 450 liters (0.45m3) for the digester and 530 liters
(0.530m3) for the gasholder. The substrates fed to the digester can Department of Science and Technology

USES
The portable Biogas Digester converts the wastes into
two (2) useful products, namely:
 fuel gas for cooking and lighting applications, and
 sludge as organic fertilizer or soil condition.

BENEFITS
 Easy to fabricate and install
 Transferrable
 Supplement energy needs of a small household
 Better waste management of agricultural, industrial and household
waste
 Reduce groundwater contamination
 Reduce greenhouse gas emission by replacing the use of fuel wood
and capturing of methane and carbon dioxide
 Production of organic fertilizer/compost

Dual Drum Composter
The ITDI-DOST dual drum composter is one of the solid
waste management technologies developed by the Environment
and Biotechnology Division of ITDI. This technology is a
small-scale composter for management of biodegradable waste
in barangays and in communities generating small amount of
organic waste.

The dual drum composter is a motorized in-vessel

composter with a feeding capacity of 50 kg per drum. The
operation is batch-type with 4 to 5 days retention time. The
composter is made of 200L-capacity high density polyethylene
Department of Science and Technology

Composting Process
The composting operation using the ITDI-DOST dual drum composter basically consists of four
Potential beneficiaries steps:
o Barangays
o Schools & Universities 1.Feedstock preparation – consists of shredding the organic wastes, then weighing and
o Small villages or community mixing of raw materials.
o Small farms
o Institutions generating small 2. In-vessel composting – where composting materials are loaded into the dual drum
amount of organic wastes composter and operated for four to five days.

3.Curing – where further maturation of raw compost occurs. Unloaded materials from the dual
drum composter are piled for a minimum of 4 weeks.

4. Screening and packing – mature compost are sieved to remove large particles. Fine
products are then packed in sacks and stored in shaded dry area.

Requires small land area

No leachate production
Easy to operate and maintain
Less attractive to pests (rats, cockroaches, flies) and
animals (cats, dogs)
Comply with Republic Act 9003
(Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000)
o Segregate waste at source
o Utilize biodegradable waste for composting
ITDI-DOST
Household Tumbling
Composter
The ITDI-DOST household tumbling composter is a solid
waste management technology developed for utilizing household
kitchen waste into compost or soil conditioner. The tumbling
composter was developed to help manage the biodegradable
waste generated at household level considering that a large
portion of municipal solid wastes came from residential source
and that more than 50% of generated solid waste is organic.

Materials for household composting

INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE-DOST

Procedure for Household Composting
1.Load the organic waste – fresh kitchen waste is daily loaded in the
composter. Then, 3 to 4 layers of dry waste is added.
2.Tumble the drum to mix – Tumble the composter 8 to 10
times to mix the drum content. Add a layer of dry waste on
top.
With daily loading, one drum will be full within three weeks.
Once the first drum is full, the other drum is then used for
loading of household kitchen waste. The content of the first
drum is
unloaded when the second drum is full.
3.Harvest the product – To unload, the composter is turned
upside down and the materials are collected in the discharge
tray.
4.Curing – Harvested raw compost are kept in sacks for further
maturation for at least two to four weeks.
5. Sieving – mature compost are sieved to remove large
particles. Fine product can be used for backyard gardening.

◤ This new design is a single screw
electric densifier that requires no oil.

◤ It is a spin-off from ITDI’s previous melting

oven densifier that uses waste cooking oil that
has now become a commercial commodity.

◤ Its basic system consists of a screw that conveys

plastics from a hopper through a heating zone in
a metal pipe where the plastic is melted.

◤ Alternative products from the melted plastic

wastes can be developed.
