SCHOOL DISASTER RISK-

REDUCTION MANAGEMENT:
SEMINAR FOR STUDENTS
AND PARENTS
PREPAREDNESS
 School Background
 School Location
 SDRRMC Objectives
 School Hazards
 Disaster Preparedness
BACKGROUND
North Fairview High School
is an integrated school composed of
Junior and senior secondary
education. It is catering almost six
(6) thousand students from grade 7
to grade 12 level and having 214
teaching personnel and 24 non-
teaching personnel based on the
records of the school’s
administration dated December
2020. It also has Open High School,
Alternative Learning System (ALS),
and Special Education program.
In September 2009,
North Fairview High
School was devastated by
flood with height of about
3-4 meters high during the
ravage of storm Ondoy
causing a lot of damages in
its learning facilities and
resources. Flooding water
that washes within it was
reportedly spilled water
from the La Mesa Dam.
GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION
Geographically, North
Fairview High School is
located at Auburn Street
North Fairview Park
Subdivision, Quezon City.
Beside it is the Tullahan
River, spillway of the La
Mesa Dam. It is only 4.6 km
away from the active valley
fault system known as the
West Valley Fault.
OBJECTIVE OF SDRRMC
SDRRMC aims to prevent and reduce the harmful effects
of disaster-causing occurrences most probably from flood
of about 1 to 2 meters high and 7.2 magnitude earthquake
known as “The Big One” These had been assessed to be the
most destructive toward our school due to its location.
Nevertheless, SDRRMC aims to meet the following
objectives:

1. Reduce the risk of disasters caused by human error,

deliberate destructiveness, and building or equipment
failure, as well as the adverse consequences of all disasters
by mandating specific security, maintenance, and training
programs (disaster prevention).
2. Be better prepared to recover from a major natural
catastrophe.
3. To capacitate students and teachers for their own safety.
4. To minimize or avoid injuries and casualties during
disaster.
5. To prepare the faculty and students from the hazards of
disaster.
6. To strengthen the abilities of students to respond to the
different disasters that they might face.
HAZARD
A hazard is a source or a situation with the potential for
harm in terms of human injury or ill-health, damage to
property, damage to the environment, or a combination of
these. It is also defines as a danger or risk.
There are so many possible hazards that might come our
way, this can be manmade or natural hazards. Considering the
fact that we are located near the La Mesa Dam, the spillway
Tullahan River, and that it is said to be the catch basin of North
Fairview Subdivision , thus, NFHS is highly susceptible to flood
in times of heavy weather. Some buildings of a certain age might
collapse causing falling debris that will cause injuries. Fire is
also not far off due to the ballooning settlers across us. Human
induced hazards are also possible when gang fights, riots, and
other related activities occurred causing harmful results. Road
accidents are likely to happen due to lack of footbridge or
pedestrian lanes crossing the Commonwealth Highway. And
lastly, since it is situated 4.6 kilometers away from the valley
fault system, an intense ground shaking is expected to devastate
us when the “Big One” hits.
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
Disaster preparedness refers to measures
taken to prepare for and reduce the effects
of disasters. That is, to predict and, where
possible, prevent disasters, mitigate their
impact on vulnerable populations, and
respond to and effectively cope with their
consequences.
