Introduction
Introduction:

Mosquito-transmitted diseases remain a main

source of illness and death. They are potential
vectors of malaria, filariasis, yellow fever, brain
fever, dengue fever, etc. Among them, the dengue
fever is the most common mosquito-borne viral
disease of humans worldwide. It is epidemic in the
Philippines and considered one of its eight
pervasive infectious diseases.

Introduction:
Three dengue virus (DENV: Flavivirus)
serotypes are circulating in the
Philippines transmitted by Aedes
aegypti (L. and Ae.) Albopictus (Skuse,
1894) Diptera: Culicidae. Environmental
risk factors and inconsistent preventive
practices, in addition to urbanization,
increasing population, inadequate public
health infrastructure, poor solid waste
management, and lack of an effective
mosquito surveillance system contribute
to the growing dengue challenge.

Introduction:
Plant-based repellents have been
applied for generations in traditional
practice as a personal protection
approach against different species of
mosquito. Knowledge of traditional
repellent plants is a significant resource
for the development of new natural
product as a alternative to chemical
repellents. DEET used in commercialized
patches may have undesirable side
effects according to study (Briassoulis et
al.,2001; Bell & Veltri, 2002).

Garlic (Allium Sativum)
“Garlic can be used to repel a variety of
crawling and flying insects, including
mosquitoes”, according to Patrick Parker
(2002). Garlic bulbs contain an amino acid
that converts to a substance called allicin
when crushed , blended or chopped.
“When garlic extract is absorbed by a
plant, biochemical changes take place in
its foliage which cause it to actively repel
insects”. In short, plants are provided with
a long-lasting case of ‘garlic breath’ that
causes insects to move elsewhere.

Oregano (Origanum Vulgare)
Oregano is a lamiaceae mint or
genus, a culinary and medical herb.
It has been used in medication and
baking for a thousand of years
(Nordqvist, 2017). Oregano is
considered as an excellent anticeptic
and insect repellent. It has some
active ingredients such as carvacrol,
thymol and a-terpinene reported
being highly effective in repelling
mosquitos.

Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon Citratus)
In the study documented by the National
Library of Medicine, the oil from lemon
grass plants was proven to be an effective
mosquito repellent. The lemon grass
contain citronella oil. Lemon grass works
by blocking the scents that mosquitoes
can smell. Mosquito are attracted to the
carbon dioxide and lactic acid scent that
people emit. Lemon grass and citronella
oil in it interrupt their ability to smell any
humans in the vicinity, therefore , reducing
the chances of them locking on a target.

The General Objective of this study is to ascertain
the degree of repellency of the said plants (Garlic,
Oregano and Lemon grass) against mosquitoes to use it
with no side effect and feedback of environmental ill
effects, as an alternative to synthetic chemical
repellents. Plant extracts may serve as suitable
alternative to synthetic repellents in the future as they
are relatively safe, inexpensive, and are readily available
in many parts of our country.

This Study will provide benefits to the lives of
many People. It will be a big help for those individuals
who are having a hard time dealing with mosquitoes.
Aside from repelling the mosquitoes, it will not cost
them much money. It can lessen bad side effects in
the body for it is more natural than other mosquito
repellants and it will not harm the Environment so
there will be less possibility that it will cause
pollution.

Methodology
a. Materials/Equipment
• 8 pieces of Garlic cloves
• 10 pieces of Oregano leaves
• ½ kg of lemon grass
• 3 (50ml) Borosilicate beakers
• 1 (250ml) Borosilicate beaker
• 150 ml Spray bottle
• Measuring cup
• Clean cloth or net bag
• Mortar and pestle
• Funnel
• Kitchen knife

b. Procedure
• In preparation for the experiment, the researchers washed the raw
materials (garlic, oregano, and lemon grass) first, then removed the
roots of the lemon grass and the skin of the garlic using a kitchen
knife.
• For the next step, the garlic cloves , lemon grass, and oregano leaves
were crushed individually using the mortar and pestle until the juices
came out.
• Using the net bag or a clean cloth, distill the oregano as well as the
lemon grass and garlic separately to get the extract. Every raw
material was squeezed into the net bag to make sure every single
drop of the extract would not go to waste.

b. Procedure
• The extract was then put into each 50-ml borosilicate beaker
individually to get the measurement in each of them.
• The researchers measure the extracts using a measuring cup. The
lemon grass extract is 50 ml, the oregano extract is 35 ml, and the
garlic extract is 20 ml.
• For the last step in making a plant-based mosquito repellent spray,
the extracts were then mixed all together in a 250-ml borosilicate
beaker, and the mixture was transferred to the 150-ml spray bottle
using a funnel.
• The procedure for making a plant-based mosquito repellent spray is
finished, and it can now be used to spray the places where
mosquitoes might be residing to repel them.
