Why use a linear model?
• Allows us to better understand the association between the variables
• Allows us to make predictions

• Process of fitting a straight line to a scatterplot is known as linear

regression
• Line is called the ‘regression line’ or ‘line of best fit’

• Use the rule

Fitting a line by eye
• Draw a line through the data that seems to balance out the data
points.
• Once drawn we can find the equation of the line

Adding in a straight line to help us make
predictions
• When we draw a straight line into the data,
we do not pass through all points.
• The distance from the line to a point is known
as the residual.
• We want to minimise the residual, so the line
fits as best as it can
Least Square Lines
• We can calculate all
the individual
elements on the CAS:
• Standard deviation
• Means
