Naming

Compounds
Exist as single atoms
Vocabulary
Words
Molecules
✔Combination of at least
two atoms in a definite
proportion, bound
together by covalent bonds
Two types of Molecules
✔ Diatomic- contains two
atoms. Ex. H2 and CO
✔ Polyatomic- consists of
more than two atoms. Ex.
H2O and NH3
Ions
✔An ion is an atom or
group of atoms that has
an electric charge.
✔ Ions with a positive
charge are called cations
✔ Ions with a negative
charge are called anions
✔ In order for the atoms
to combine together to
form a compound it will
undergo the process of
chemical bonding.
Ionic Compounds
formed between a metal atom and a
nonmetal atom, and the type of
intramolecular bond exist between
atoms is ionic bond due to the
presence of ionic charges.
How to write chemical formula for ionic
compounds
• Step 1 (Atoms involved) - Sodium
and Chlorine
• Step 2 (Chemical symbol) - Na + Cl
• Step 3 (Formed Ion) - Na+1 + Cl-1
How to write chemical formula for ionic
compounds
How to name ionic compounds
• If you will combine two elements,
metal cations take their names
from the elements while the
anions take first part of the
element and add suffix –ide at the
end
How to name ionic compounds
• For compounds contain three
elements, cation goes first in its
name before the polyatomic ion
which usually ends with –ite or –
ate.
How to name ionic compounds
How to name ionic compounds
• For compound containing
metallic ion of variable
charge, you can use classical
method or stock method.
Classical Method
• Name of metallic ion ends in
–ous (lower charge) and –ic
for higher charge.
Stock Method
• Metal name is followed by
the value of the charge
written in Roman numeral
enclosed in parenthesis.
Covalent Compounds
Formed between two or more
nonmetal atoms, and the type of
intramolecular bond that exist
between atoms is covalent bond.
How to write chemical formula for
covalent compounds
How to write chemical formula for
covalent compounds
• Step 1 (Atoms involved) - Carbon
and Chlorine
• Step 2 (Chemical symbol) - C + Cl
• Step 3 (Number of atoms) - 1 + 4
How to write chemical formula for
covalent compounds
• We can determine the number of
atom based on the Greek prefixes
used before each type of atom.
However, mono is not allowed to
be written at the beginning of the
chemical name.

covalent compounds
How to name covalent compounds
• For binary compounds, place the
name of the first element the
follow the second element by
adding –ide to the root element
name.
How to name covalent compounds
• For binary compounds considered
as acids, use prefix hydro- followed
by stem name of the anion ending
with –ic then by the word “acid”

How to name covalent compounds
• Oxy-acids contain hydrogen,
oxygen and another element is
named in two ways.
How to name covalent compounds
• For anions ending –ate, change it
to –ic then follow with the word
acid.
• For anions ending –ite, change it to
–ous then follow with the word
acid
Sulfur dioxide
Lithium carbonate
Sodium cyanide
Sodium carbonate
Barium oxide
Mg3(PO4)2
MgO

SnO
FeSO3
AuCl3
SrCO3
