DROWNING DETECTION SYSTEM USING GSM and REMOTE

ALERT
ABSTRACT
Drowning has been a major global injury issue and is the second largest
explanation for accidental injuries and deaths, only after accidents because of
road traffics. It accounts for 3,20,000 cases yearly and a major cause for
accidental death globally. The paper will be an amalgam of innovation and
traditional techniques. These systems could be life saver for a person drowning.
The signal received by the receiver can be sent to lifeguard, parent, poolside
workstation or neighbor, in directive to authorize the rescuer will furnish immediate
help. In addition, to the proposed solution we used GSM technology to establish
the data link. This device transfers real time data in case the threshold is crossed
INTRODUCTION
This system is particularly valuable for locations such as swimming pools,
beaches, or even natural water bodies where monitoring individuals in the water
can be challenging.
The system operates by employing various sensors and algorithms to detect signs
of distress or unusual behavior in the water, which might indicate a drowning
incident.
Once a potential incident is detected, it utilizes the GSM network to send
immediate alerts to designated recipients, enabling rapid response and potentially
saving live

DESIGN OF THE MODEL
INTRODUCTION TO AVR Studio 5
AVR Studio 5 is a free integrated development environment (IDE) for programming
Atmel's AVR microcontrollers, including the 8-bits, 32-bits, and ARM Cortex-M
families.

It's a complete software development environment that includes an editor, a

simulator, and a programmer, among other things.
KEIL CROSS COMPILER
Keil C51 is a widely used cross compiler and integrated development environment
(IDE) for programming microcontrollers based on the 8051 architecture.
The Keil C51 compiler is part of the Keil MDK (Microcontroller Development Kit),
which provides a comprehensive set of tools for developing embedded software
for various microcontroller platforms.
BUILDING AN APPLICATION IN AVR STUDIO
To create (compile, assemble, and link) an application with AVR Studio, you'll need
to do the following:
1. Choose a project first.
2. Choose either Build - Rebuild all target files or Build target from the Build menu.
3. The files in your project are compiled, assembled, and linked by AVR Studio.
WORKING
● The proposed system is works with the RF module where we can use a RF
module and thus can provide a multi user interface
● The sensors continuously collect data related to water conditions and the
movements or behaviors of people in the water. This data is transmitted to a
central control unit.
● The system employs a sophisticated drowning detection algorithm that
assesses the collected data and identifies potential drowning incidents based
on predefined criteria.
● If the algorithm detects a potential drowning incident, it triggers an alert. This
alert can take the form of an SMS or phone call sent via the GSM network to
designated recipients, such as lifeguards, caregivers, or emergency services.
IMPLEMENTATION AND TESTING
● For the control of the complete drowning rescue system, an ATmega328p
microprocessor was employed.
● As a result, the Arduino 1.8.5 IDE is utilised, which is an open-source Arduino
software (IDE) with a java-based environment that allows you to build C
language programmes and simply upload them to any Arduino board.
ACCEPTANCE TESTING
The transmitter strap module was put on an individual's wrist after the Drowning
rescue device was constructed, and it needed a few moments to settle before it
began beating in line with the individual's pulse.
When the transmitter strap module detects an irregular pulse beat, it transmits a
signal to the receiver or lifeguard module, which is displayed on the LCD and
audible via the buzzer.
PROGRAM TESTING
Following the development of the programme codes, the code was compiled to
ensure that there were no build issues or problems.
The sections where there were issues, such as the RF module header not being
called correctly, were fixed and rebuilt, after which it was successfully compiled.
UNIT TESTING
Before soldering on the Vero board, each of the drowning rescue system
components was examined with a digital multimeter to ensure that they were
indeed operating.
ADVANTAGES
1.Swift Response: The system enables rapid response to potential drowning incidents by
alerting authorities or caregivers in real-time via the GSM network.
2.Enhanced Safety: It significantly improves overall water safety by detecting incidents early
and minimizing the time it takes to initiate rescue operations.
3.24/7 Monitoring: The system can operate round-the-clock, providing continuous
monitoring of aquatic environments even during non-operational hours.
4.Reduced Human Error: It reduces the likelihood of human error in monitoring and
detecting drowning incidents, as it relies on sensors and algorithms for detection.
5.Remote Access: Operators and authorities can access real-time data and video feeds
remotely, allowing for quick assessment and informed decision-making.
6.Customizable Alerts: The system allows for customizable alert configurations, ensuring
that alerts are sent to the right individuals or teams based on predefined criteria.
DISADVANTAGES
1.Cost: Implementing and maintaining such a system can be expensive, including
the cost of sensors, equipment, and ongoing monitoring services.
2.False Alarms: The system may generate false alarms due to sensor
malfunctions, environmental factors (e.g., turbulent water), or unexpected user
behavior, which can lead to unnecessary panic and response efforts.
3.Dependency on Technology: The system's effectiveness relies heavily on
technology, making it vulnerable to technical glitches, power outages, or network
failures.
4.Privacy Concerns: Continuous surveillance and data collection can raise privacy
concerns, particularly in public or semi-public aquatic settings.
5.Maintenance: Regular maintenance and calibration of sensors are necessary to
FUTURE SCOPE
1.Integration with AI and Machine Learning: Implementing artificial intelligence (AI) and machine
learning algorithms can enhance the system's ability to distinguish between false alarms and
actual drowning incidents, improving accuracy.
2.Enhanced Sensor Technologies: Ongoing advancements in sensor technology may lead to more
sensitive and reliable sensors that can better detect drowning incidents and water-related
emergencies.
3.Augmented Reality (AR) Support: Incorporating AR technology could provide real-time visual
assistance to lifeguards and emergency responders, improving their situational awareness during
rescue operations.
4.Wearable Devices: Development of wearable devices with drowning detection capabilities can
extend the reach of the system to individuals in the water, such as swimmers and boaters.
5.IoT Integration: The Internet of Things (IoT) can play a significant role in expanding the
capabilities of the system by connecting various devices and sensors for comprehensive
monitoring.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, drowning detection using GSM and remote sensors is a valuable
technology that can help prevent drowning incidents in bodies of water. It is a
practical and affordable solution that can be easily installed and maintained. The
system utilizes a remote sensor that detects water pressure changes and sends
an alert message to a designated phone number via a GSM module. This
provides an early warning system that can potentially save lives. With the
increasing number of drowning incidents around the world, this technology can
play a significant role in reducing these incidents and keeping people safe.
