YEAR 11
THE WOMAN WHO LOVES MONEY
The necklace is a French story written by Guy de Maupassant
THE NECKLACE
• the story was about a woman born into a family of clerks. She was dreaming
to loved or weeded by a man of wealth and distinction. But she let herself be
married to a minor official at the Ministry of Education.
• They were invited by a government minister to an important party
in a big house. “ I’m not going to the party,” the woman said. Her
husband was wondering and said, “Why? ”. She said that she
doesn’t have any beautiful and expensive dresses. He asked her “
How much would a suitable dress cost? She replied saying “ I don’t
know exactly, but I think it cost 400 francs.
• She think that the dress wasn’t enough for her. She told her
husband that she want jewels. She started saying again that she
don’t want to go to the party. Her husband got an idea and said “
You could wear flowers, they are very fashionable at this time of
year.” But she wasn’t convinced, so she start crying. Go and see
your friend and ask her to lend you some jewels. You know her well
enough for that” her husband said. The next day she went to her
friend’s house and borrow a diamond necklace.
• She went to the party with her husband. She danced wildly, with
passion, forgetting everything in the triumph of her beauty.
When she arrived home she was taking a final look at herself. But
suddenly she saw that the necklace wasn’t on her neck. She told her
husband and he was shocked. They looked everywhere in the dress, but
they couldn’t find it. She said it couldn’t be at the party because she
touched it when she left the party. “But if you had lost it in the street we
would have heard it fall,” her husband said. After a few days of searching,
they couldn’t find it. They replace the necklace with another one that
looks the same it cost forty thousand francs. It was so expensive for
them, so they work for ten years to get that price. She washed the dishes.
she washed the dirty linen, the shirts, and the dishcloths, which she hung
to dry on a line, she carried garbage down to the street every morning.
THIS IS NOT THE END. IF YOU ARE CURIOUS YOU SHOULD READ IT.
THE WRITER WANT TO TEACH US :
• NOT to compare yourself to other people.
• Do not borrow things that you can’t afford the price of it.
• Do not feel jealous of other people.
