RATIONAL

NUMBERS
RATIONAL NUMBER

•A rational number is any number that can

be expressed in the form of fraction or
where a and b are integers and .
EXAMPLE OF RATIONAL NUMBER

• A rational number like is commonly referred to

as a fraction.
• 7 is a rational number because it can be expressed
as .
TERMINATING DECIMAL AND
NONTERMINATING REPEATING DECIMAL

• A terminating decimal is a decimal that has an end

digit. It is a decimal, which has a finite number of
digits.
• A nonterminating repeating decimal are the one that
does not have and end term. It has an infinite
numbers of terms.
HOW TO CONVERT FRACTION INTO
DECIMAL FORM?

• To change a fraction to a decimal,

divide the numerator by the
denominator or use the power of ten.

HOW TO CONVERT TERMINATING DECIMAL
TO FRACTION?

• To convert a terminating decimal to a fraction,

simply omit the decimal point and supply the
proper denominator. If there is 1 number after the
decimal point, use 10, if there are two, use 100, and
if there are three, use 1000; etc.

OPERATIONS ON RATIONAL NUMBERS

If are rational numbers, then:

EXAMPLE ADDING RATIONAL NUMBERS

a.
EXAMPLE

Find the LCD (Least Common Denominator) first.

The LCD of 4 and 8 is 8
Then divide the LCD to the denominator, then
multiply to the numerator.
b.
EXAMPLE

First make the proper fraction into improper fraction

Next find the LCD of 2, 3, and 4. LCD:12
Then divide the LCD to the denominator, then multiply it to the
numerator.

DIVIDING RATIONAL NUMBERS

There are two ways of dividing a rational numbers, first is the cross
multiplication method where in you just need to multiply (not
divide) the rational numbers diagonally, while the second way of
dividing rational number is getting the reciprocal of the second
rational number which is the one being divided, then after getting
the reciprocal, change the division operation into multiplication
operation, then simplify. See the examples on the next slides.

Cross-multiplication, multiply 4 to 3 for the numerator, then

11 and 5 for the denominator.
