ON THE PART OF THE ADVISER
Please read the sports article of the

SAMPLE SPORTS
ARTICLES
Reynel Hugnatan collected 20 points and 8 rebounds and Willie Miller scored 7 of
Alaska’s final 15 points as the Aces survived a ferocious comeback by Ginebra in the third
quarter in a 105-96 win, their fourth straight in the KFC-PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta
Coliseum, last night.
The Aces witnessed how the Gin Kings nearly wiped out a 20-point lead as Ginebra
came through with a 38-point effort in the third quarter, but kept their noted poise down the
stretch to remain unbeaten and deal the most popular team its first defeat.
”I always spoke to the team over and over and over that once the game gets easy,
it gets hard in a hurry,” said Alaska coach Tim Cone.
“We played loosey-loosey in the second half. But it’s how we responded to that run
that’s important. We didn’t get caught in the panic. Know Ginebra wouldn’t just go down
without a fight.”
The runner-up in this tournament last season blasted ahead early and took a 60-40
lead. But the game got very interesting when Jay-Jay Helterbrand and Ronald Tubid hit form
and started to knock in triples as Ginebra came to within 82-80 going into the fourth quarter.
Ginebra was still well within striking after a Helterbrand basket (92-90). But Miller,
fresh off the bench, hit a long jumper, scored on a fastbreak, split his free throws and then
had a key lay-up after points from Hugnatan and LA Tenorio to push Alaska safely ahead at
103-95 with 1:02 left to play.
Miller wound up with 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and committed only a
turnover. Tony De La Cruz added 16 points, Tenorio had 15, and Joe DeVance, playing hurt
with a fractured rib, 10 for the Aces, who will now have 10 days of rest before getting back in
action on Nov. 4 against Sta. Lucia.
Sonny Thoss grabbed 10 rebounds and scored 6 points.
The scores:
Alaska (105) -– Hugnatan 20, De La Cruz 16, Tenorio 15, Miller 11, DeVance 10,
Ferriols 9, Fonacier 8, Thoss 6, Borboron 5, Cariaso 5, Burtscher 0.
Ginebra (96) -– Helterbrand 23, Tubid 22, Intal 13, Villanueva 11, Salvacion 8,
Mamaril 7, Alvarez 6, Wilson 2, Cruz 2, Baguio 2.
Quarterscores: 32-26; 60-42; 82-80; 105-96.
Alaska 104 - Simpson 27, Baguio 24, De Vance 16, Tenorio 13, Dela Cruz
10, Thoss 5, Hugnatan 5, Eman 4, Borboran 0, Fonacier 0.
Coke 103 - David 31, Penny 25, Taulava 19, Lanete 8, Cruz 5, Macapagal
5, Calimag 4, Rizada 2, Espino 2, Ross 1, Antonio 1, Allera 0, Bono 0.
Quarterscores: 22-28, 52-49, 78-74, 104-103.
Systema zooms past RTU to end V-League 1st round campaign

Ending their first round campaign on a high-note, the Systema Active

Smashers upended the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunder 3-1 (25-
18, 22-25, 25-17, 25-22) at the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 Men’s Division
at the Arena in San Juan Thursday evening.

Amidst a string of errors, the Active Smashers pulled it together in the end
game with Roland Tonquin and Angelo Espiritu rising high in the defensive to
give Systema a first place tie with IEM Phoenix Volley Masters with a win-loss
slate of 2-1.

Espiritu and Mark Lee scored on back-to-back possessions to make it 23-22

for the Active Smashers as RTU committed a team blunder that gave the
match point to Systema.

Systema head coach Arnold Laniog admitted that his team’s 40 errors were
so much for them that it fueled the youngsters of RTU to step on the gas
pedal in the second set.

“We were fighting against ourselves in the second set,” Laniog said. “We
committed five consecutive errors in the set and RTU pounced on it.”
He added that victory would come to those who would take the upper hand
after the 1-1 set, and his team responded in the third.

Systema continued their run in the fourth, albeit thee see-saw action.

With the scores tied at 11 apiece, the Active Smashers cruised to a 5-1 sprint
with Patrick Rojas capping it off with an attack that bounced off the RTU
defense.

Laniog was thankful for his Salvador Depante and Lee who stepped up in the
absence of their main man Christopher Antonio.

Depante was everywhere on the Systema court in the fourth set with his
relentless attacking and the occasional receiving game.

“I’m thankful for Depante and Lee, they really stepped up for us,” Laniog
said.
Depante led all scorers with 26 while Espiritu followed suit with 19.

Sahud Masahud, Alnasip Laja and Carlo Sebastian combined for 34 for RTU
who ended their first round campaign at a win-loss slate of 1-2.
