There are three degrees of comparison of adjectives.
These are the positive, comparative and superlative degrees.

Positive degree of adjective makes no comparison. It only describes a noun or a pronoun.

Example: The rat is small
Comparative degree compares two nouns or pronouns. Most often, they are formed by
adding -er to one- syllable adjectives and words than after the adjective.
Example: The rat is smaller than the cat.
Note that:
For adjective words with two or more syllables, the comparative degree is formed by add
more before the word adjective and than after the adjective.
Example: Sandals are more comfortable to wear than slippers.
Words that follow a CVC pattern (Consonant Vowel Consonant) double the last consonant
letter of the adjective before adding er to compare two nouns or pronouns.
Example: The cow is bigger than the goat.
Superlative degree compares three or more nouns and pronouns. It is formed by adding est
to the adjective.
Example: The ant is the smallest among the three animals.
For adjective words with three or more syllables, the superlative degree is formed by adding
most to the word.
Example: Among the three footwears, shoes are the most comfortable to wear.
Words that follow a CVC pattern (Consonant Vowel Consonant) double the last
consonant letter of the adjective before adding est to compare three or more nouns
or pronouns.
Example: The elephant is the biggest among the three animals.
