Outline
• Company’s Profile

• Summary of Work Involved in During the Training

• Experience Gained

• Conclusion
Company’s Profile and Workdone
Sammya Nigeria Limited was established in 1993, and has been engaged in
various construction services for over two decades. Sammya is a civil
engineering and property development company. The company engages in the
provision of engineering infrastructure, construction of roads, bridges and
property development.

During the course of the training, the company was involved with the following project:

Project Name: Construction of Osogbo – Ila-Odo 45km Dual Carriage Way with 9km Dagbolu Loop
Date Started: May 1, 2012
Client: Osun State Government
Status: On-going Project
Construction of Flexible Pavement
Description: The pavement under construction consists of layers namely; sub-grade, sub-base (150mm), stone base
(150mm), binder course (60mm), and the surface (wearing) course (40mm). The width of the road is 9.3m.

Pavement construction processes showing (a) scarification of existing pavement, (b) compaction of sub-grade, (c) sub-
base material, (d) wetting of the sub-base material (e) compacted sub-base course and (f) base course material.
Construction of Flexible Pavement Continued

Continuation of pavement construction processes showing (g) wetting of the stone base, (h) compaction of stone base,
(i) priming processes, (j) laying of the binder course (k) surface-dressing and (l) rolling and finishing.
Construction of Culverts
Description: The culvert was a 1.5mx1.5mx17m (internal measurements) single box culvert constructed at
Ch9+855 of the left lane of the road. It consists of the bottom slab, top slab, side walls, and wing walls splayed at
angle 45o.

Culvert construction processes showing (a) the excavated trench, (b) the formwork, (c) casting process and (d) finished
culvert.
Construction of Median Barrier
Description: The median barrier is made up of concrete, so it was often referred to as concrete median barrier. The
type constructed on the site was a cast-in-place concrete barrier made with a GOMACO 3600 slip-form machine. The
mould used had the following dimensions: Height = 80cm, Base Width = 60cm, Top Width = 17cm.

Median Barrier construction processes showing (a) setting of alignment for the machine, (b) casting of the barrier using
the slip-form machine and (c) finishing and smoothening.
Construction of Drains
Description: The drainage constructed was a reinforced concrete trapezoidal drain with a base width of 600mm, a
top width of 2100mm, and side slopes of 1:1. Reinforcement mesh of Y10 bars was used and concrete grade C15
was used for the blinding while C30 was used for casting the drain itself.

a b c

Reinforced concrete drain construction processes showing (a) structural drawing for the drain, (b) casting of drain and
(c) finished drain.
Quality Control Test
Description: The insitu density test was carried out frequently on the subgrade, sub-base, and base course of the
road; using sand-bottle replacement method. The dry density of the compacted soil or pavement material is a
common measure of the amount of the compaction achieved in the field during compaction.

The insitu density test conduction showing (a) digging of the ground and packing the sand to be weighed and
(b) speedy tester used to determine the moisture content of the soil.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the SIWES programme is a good initiative that bridges
the gap between academics lessons in class and the field work and the
industry as a whole; thereby providing significant experience for
students, even before the completion of their studies. I can specifically
say that I have acquired several experiences during the training period.
