PASSIVE VOICE

WHEN EMPHASIS IS ON THE


ACTION( VERB ) AND THE OBJECT
O F A S E N T E N C E R AT H E R T H A N
THE SUBJECT OF A SENTENCE
ACTIVE TO PASSIVE :

1. The object of the active sentences becomes


the subject of the passive sentence.
2. The finite form of the verb is changed ( to be
+ past participle )
3.The subject of the active sentence becomes
the object of the passive sentence.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES :

1. active : he buys some books


passive : some books are bought by him
2. active : he bought some books
passive : some books were bought by
by him
FORMING PASSIVE VOICE

PAST PERFECT IS USED :
To express a previous action or state that began in the
past and continued up to another point in the past,
and its consequences have implication for that
second point in time
active sentence :

PAST PERFECT CONTINUOUS TENSE IS USED

To show that an action started in the past and


continued up to another point in the past.

hours .
3. He had been playing tennis since 4 o’clock

Change the object into subject
Change the verb into the past participle form
Add the preposition “by “
