MANAGEMENT OF

INTERNAL SPORTS
INJURIES
 SPRAIN --- SPRAIN IS AN INJURY O THE LIGAMENTS, IT OCCURS WHEN LIGAMENTS
ARE OVERSTRETCHED. DURING EXERCISE , LIGAMENTS NEAR JOINTS SOMETIMES
BECOMES TENSE AND GET INJURED OR FORM A WEAK SPOT.
SPRAIN MAY TAKE PLACE IN WEIGHT LIFTING TRACK AND FIELD , TENNIS ETC.
THEY OCCUR AT THE JOINTS AND PARTS LIKE ELBOW ,KNEE OR ANLKE JOINTS MAY BE AFFECTED.
SPRAIN ARE OF THREE TYPES
MILD--- WHEN THERE IS SLIGHT TEARING OF SOME LIGAMENT FIBRES
AND THERE IS NO LOSS OF FUNCTION , IT IS KNOWN AS MILD SPRAIN

MODERATE--- WHEN RUPTURE OF SOME LIGAMENT IS ACCOMPAINED BY SOME LOSS OF FUNCTION , IT IS


KNOWN AS MODERATE SPRAIN

SEVERE --- THE TOTAL RUPTURE O LIGAMENTS OR EVEN SEPRATION ROM BONE WITH TOTAL LOSS OF
MOVEMENT IS CALLED SPRAIN

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS--- ACUTE PAIN IN THE INJURED PART


SWELLING ON THE SPOT
SOFTNESS AT THE SPOT AND PAIN ON TOCHING
FIRST AID AND GENERAL TREATMENT
DO NOT MOVE THE INJURED PART. CONSULT A DOCTOR AND FOLLOW MEDICAL ADVICE
IN CASE OF A MILD SPRAIN , APPLY ICE COMPRESSION 3 TO 4 TIMES A DAY FOR THREE DAYS AND COVER THE
AFFECTED PART BY ELASTIC CREPE BANDAGE AFTER TREATMENT.
AFTER THREE DAYS APPLY A HEAT PACK
 STRAIN--- IT IS THE RESULT OF STRESS OR FORCE APPILED ON TISSUE. APPLICATION
OF FORCE RESULTS IN SOME DEFORMITY IN TISSUES. THIS DEFORMATION IS TERMED AS
STRAIN.
STRAIN MAY ALSO BE TERMED AS INJURY TO MUSCLES OR TENDONS CONNECTED TO THE BONES APPLICATION OF
VIOLENT OR EXTRA FORCE MAY RESULTS IN SUCH INJURIES.SUCH INJURIES CAN TAKE PLACE IN GYMNASTICS,
WEIGHT LIFTING. SKING ETC.
 STRAIN ARE OF THREE TYPES

MILD---- WHEN THERE IS A SLIGHT MUSCLE PULL WITHOUT ANY TEARING OF THE
MUSCLES OR TENDONS.

MODERATE--- WHEN THERE IS A SLIGHT TEARING OF MUSCLES OR TENDONS AND THE LOSS OF STRENGTH

SEVERE---- WHEN MUSCLES OR TENDONS RUPTURE . IN SUCH A CASE THERE IS EXCESSIVE LOSS OF STRENGTH

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS


PAIN IN MOVING BODY PART SUCH AS ARM OR LEGS
SWELLING IN THE AREA OF STRAIN
FEELING AS I SOMETHING HAS BROKEN INSIDE
LOSS OF STRENGTH IN MOVEMENTS.
 FIRST AID AND GENERAL TREATMENT---
STOP ANY MOVEMENT OF THE INJURED PART. APPLY ICE COMPRESSION
AND TAKE MEDICAL ADVICE
FOR MILD STRAIN USE ICE MASSAGE 3 TO 4 TIMES DAILY
AFTER TWO DAYS,STOP ICE MASSAGE AND APPLY A HEAT PACK INSTEAD
WRAP THE AFFECTED PART WITH CREPE BANDAGE.

SPRAIN AND STRAIN ARE INJURIES RELATED TO MUSCLES AND LIGAMENTS . IN THESE
TYPE OF INJURIES ,TISSUES ARE DAMAGED .MANAGEMENT OF THESE COMMON INJURIES
ARE COMMON.BOTH TYPES OF INJURIES CAN BE MANAGED BY PRICE AND M ICE
METHODS. LETS DISCUSS THESE IN BRIEF

PROTECTION– MOVEMENT O INJURED IS STOPPED BY GIVIING SUPPORT
REST--- INJURED PERSON SHOULD BE AT REST SO THERE IS NO MOVEMENT O THE INJURED PART
ICE ---- ICE SHOULD BE APPLIED ON THE INJURED PART 3-4 TIMES DAILY FOR THREE DAYS
COMPRESSTION --- INJURED PART SHOULD BE COMPRESSED WITH THE HELP OF APAD TO DECREASE SWELLING
AND INFLAMATION .PRESSURE SHOULD BE ADEQUATE SO THAT BLOOD FLOW IS NOT OBSTRUCTED

ELEVATION--- INJURED PART SHOULD BE ELEVATED SO THAT EXCESS BLOOD LOW IS CONTROLLED WITH THIS
METHOD ATHLETE WILL FEEL SOME RELIEF FROM PAIN AND SWELLING WILL DECREASE
MOVEMENT----AFTER SWELLING IS REDUCED WE SHOULD START MOVING THE INJURED
PART SLOWLY IF THERE IS NO PAIN MOVEMENT SPEED CAN BE INCREASED AND IF PAIN
IS FELT MOVEMENT SPEED CAN BE DECREASED

ICE --- ICE SHOULD BE APPLIED FOR FIRST 72 HOURS. AFTER THAT HOT WATER SHOULD BE APPLIED TO ENSURE
PROPER BLOOD FLOW.

COMPRESSION—WITH THE APLICATION OF ICE COMPRESSION SHOLUD ALSO BE APPLIED SO THAT


TISSUES GET RELIEF

EXERCISE --- IT IS NECESSARY TO BRING THE INJURED PART TO ITS PREVIOUS FITNESS LEVEL BY DOING
EXERCISES IT ALSO NESSARY TO EXERCISE UNDER THE GUIDENCE OF A FITNESS EXPERT
