jaipur
The Rose Pink City founded by Maharaja Jai Singh II (1693-
1743), is the capital of Rajasthan. Jaipur is surrounded on all
sides by rugged hills, crowned with forts & enclosed by
embattled walls. Houses with latticed windows line the streets
with their rose pink colour, lending enchantment to the scene,
which is almost magical at sunset.

• Jaigarh Fort is also known as the
fort of victory.
• The Jaigarh fort is the most
spectacular of the three-hilltop
forts that overlook Jaipur.
• It was built between the 15th and
the 18th century, and stands 15
km from Jaipur.
• The display includes a collection
of canons, many of which are
exquisitely decorated and were
used in the Mughal campaigns led
by the Rajput King, Raja Man
Singh.

Jaipur. Built mainly in 1734
by Jai Singh II and extended
in 1868.

is a multi-layered palace,

and stone screens.

and red sandstone and the
walls of this monument are
decorated with artistic
motifs.

• The Jantar Mantar is an
astronomical observatory located
at Jaipur, It was constructed by
Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II in the
year 1716.
• There are huge masonry instruments
of extraordinary precision located
inside the Jantar Mantar that can
still be used accurately.
• The astronomical instruments at
the Jantar Mantar were meant to
determine the exact position of
longitudes, the equator and the
latitudes. The main astronomical
instruments set up at this royal
observatory are the Jaiprakash
Yantra, Ram Yantra and the Samrat
Yantra.

red sand stone and white
marble.

palace in the 19th century. The

Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II
Museum and on display here are a
wide array of royal costumes,
some very exquisite and precious
Pashmina (Kashmiri) Shawls,
Benaras silk saris, Sanganeri
prints and folk embroidery.

Jodhpur was founded by Rao Jodhaji in 1459 AD. The
genius of its sculptors comes to life in its exquisite
palaces, forts, temples and havelis, which stand testimony
to the imperial grandeur. The most alluring part of
Jodhpur is the traditional lifestyle, festivity and the
smiling people who treasure this former princely state.

Jaisalmer is a bit of a paradox. So far west that it is in the heart
of the desert. Yet this frontier town is today one of Rajasthan's
best-loved tourist destinations. Local colour and warmth
prevail over the inhospitable and forbidding terrain, imbuing
the medieval town with a special magic.Rawal Jaisal, a
descendent of the Yadav Clan and a Bhati Rajput, laid the
foundation of this city in 1156 AD. Jaisalmer is a marvel of
beautiful culture and harsh climatic conditions, together
amounting to a memorable.

built about 300 years ago
and is still partially lived
in.

the hill and,it is said that
it once had two additional
wooden storey, in an attempt
to make it as high as the
Maharaja's Palace.

Mount Abu huddles among the rocks on a 1,220-m granite
table mountain at the far southwestern end of the Aravalli
hills. The only hill station in Rajasthan. It is built around a
lake and is surrounded by forested hills. Mount Abu is also
well known for the famous Dilwara temples and many more
archaeological remains. There are interesting treks and picnic
spots, romantic royal retreats of the various erstwhile families.

• These beautifully carved temples
built between 11th & 13th
century AD are sheer elegance in

• The Vimal Vasahi Temple is the
oldest of these, dedicated to
the first Tirthankara. Built in
1031 AD (by Vimal Shah- a
merchant and representative of
the then Gujarat ruler), it is a
superb example of temple
architecture.

some beautiful Jain temples
enclosed within. Among the
noteworthy temples are
Achaleswar Mahadev temple
(1412 AD) and Kantinath
Jain temple (1513 AD).

• The latter has a gold


plated image. The fort was
built in the 14th century
AD by Rana Kumbha and is
approachable by a motorable
road.

'chhatris'. Alauddin Khilji was the first to sack Chittaur in
1303 ADand 1533 AD during the rule of Sikramjeet, came the
second attack from Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat.

Chittorgarh fort
• The fort is a massive
structure with many
gateways built by the
literary rulers in 7th
century AD. Perched on a
height of 180 m high hill,
it sprawls over 700 acres.
• The main gates are Padam
Pol, Bhairon Pol, Hanuman
Pol and Ram Pol. The fort
has many magnificent
monuments - all fine
examples of the Rajput
architecture.

palace is a magnificent
one. It was here that Rana
Ratan Singh showed a
glimpse of queen Padmini
to Alauddin Khilji. Rani
Padmini stood in 'Zanana
Mahal' - a pavilion in the
centre and her reflection
was visible to Alauddin
Khilji in a mirror placed
in the main hall.

The city was founded in 1567 AD by Maharana Udai Singh on
the advice of a sage. Udaipur was last of the numerous Mewar
capitals. It was in Udaipur that legendary Maharana Pratap
was born.Udaipur is known as the ' City of Lakes'. The two
most scenic and famous lakes of the city are Lake Pichola and
Lake Fateh Sagar.Udaipur is situated around the shimmering
clear blue water lakes.

impeccable in taste.

brings you to the Tripolia, the
Triple gate.
• Balconies, cupolas and towers

• Blue Glazed Pottery famous
in Jaipur was introduced to
India by the Muslims and
popularised by Maharaja Ram
Singh of Jaipur. The pottery
is made of ground quartz
stone, fuller`s earth and
sodium sulphate instead of
the simple clay. Blue and
white are the traditional
colours used though, more
recently, yellow, pink and
green are also being used.

the temperatures can dip

dhurries made of camel hair
are very much in vogue.
Carpets: Initially, huge
carpets were specially
woven for royal residences.
Inspired by the Mughals,
prisoners were employed at

continued to date. Bikaner
is still famous for its so-
called jail carpets.

jewelry, exquisite ornaments are
made in Jaipur and Jodhpur using
emerald, diamond, pearl, garnet,
agate and lapis lazuli.
Colourfully enamelled gold and
silver jewellery is also very
popular. Kundan, (precious stone
set in gold) jewelry is a
specialty of Jaipur. Rajasthan
is one of the largest centres in
the world for the hand-cutting
of gems. It is not unusual to
find shops piled with onyx,
cat`s eye, lapiz lazuli,
carnelian, garnets, amethysts
and topaz.

Puppets is an ancient and
popular form of folk
entertainment. No village
fair, no religious festival
and no social gathering in
Rajasthan can be complete
without Puppets. With their
sparkling eyes and brightly
colored dresses, the
kathputlis , gives
unforgettable experience.

recall more easily than most
other things memories of a

camel safari
Like horse safaris, camel
safaris are also popular in
Rajasthan. The camel,
popularly known as the ship
of the desert, is not only
common in the Thar desert,
but also the only means of
transportation in remote
areas. The safari is
organised to take one
through the golden sands of
the vast Thar desert and
untamed countryside.
ghoomar
This is basically a
community dance for women
and performed on auspicious
occasions. Derived from the
word ghoomna, piroutte,
this is a very simple dance
where the ladies move
gently, gracefully in
circles. The Ghoomar is the
characteristic dance of the
Bhils. Men and women sing
alternately and move
clockwise & anticlockwise
giving free and intended
play to the ample folds of
ghagra.

• The Jasnathis of Bikaner and
Churu are renowned for their
tantric power and the dance
is in keeping with their
lifestyles. A large ground is
prepared with live wood and
charcoal where the Jasnathi
men and boys jump on to the
fire to the accompaniment of
drum beats. The music
gradually rises in tempo and
reaches a crescendo, the
dancers seem to be in a
trance, like state. This is a
desert dance.
