Quantitative
Research Sample Size
‘Sample size’ is a market research term used for
defining the number of respondents included in
conducting research. Researchers choose their sample
based on demographics, such as age, gender, or physical
location. It can be vague or specific.

Quantitative
Research Sample Size Determination
Sample size determination is the process of choosing the right
number of people from a larger group to use in a sample. It
ensures that the sample is big enough to give statistically valid
results and accurate estimation of population parameters but
small enough to be manageable and cost-effective.

Research
Terms
• Population size - how many people fit your demographic,
the total number of people/population in general.

• Confidence level - how sure are you that your data is

accurate. It is expressed as a percentage and aligned to the
confidence interval.

Terms

• Margin of error (confidence interval) - tells how far off from

the population means you’re willing to allow your data to fall.

Calculation Formula
According to Statology.org, Slovin’s formula is used to
calculate the minimum sample size needed to estimate a statistic
based on an acceptable margin of error.

Slovin’s Formula

n – sample size needed

N – population size
e – margin of error

Sample Size Calculation Formula

The Margin of Error and the Level of Confidence are tied

together. This means that the higher the confidence level, the
smaller the margin of error, then vice versa.

90% = 10% (0.10)

The following are the standard
95% = 5% (0.05)
Confidence level with its
Corresponding Margin of Error: 99% = 1% (0.01)

Sample Size Calculation Formula
Suppose a lawyer wants to estimate the proportion
of individuals in a certain neighborhood that are in
favor of a new law.

Suppose he knows there are 10,000 individuals in

this neighborhood and it would take far too long to
survey each individual, so he would instead like to
take a random sample of individuals.

Assume that he would like to estimate this

proportion with a margin of error of .05 or less.

Slovin’s Formula

n Data Given:

n N – 10,000
e – 5% (0.05)
n = 384.61 / n = 385
