FIVE TRADIONAL
TEACHING HABITS
TO AVOID
1. Shh !
• Most educators would agree that
shushing is not an effective tool
to get attention, mostly because
it’s contagious.
Try this instead:
• Use visual, verbal, and kinesthetic
signals to get attention, such as
holding up the peace sign,
flickering lights, or fun “call and
response” signals.
2. Talking too much
• In most classrooms, the teacher
talks a lot more than the learners,
and often unnecessarily.
Try this instead:

• Give instructions using as few

words as possible. Teach more by
asking than telling.
3. Answering questions that
learners can answer
• Answering queries is certainly an
important part of the teacher’s role, but
many teachers are often too quick to
answer the questions themselves.
Try this instead:
• When a student asks a question, pretend
it’s a tennis ball and hit it right back to
the student.
• Offer a second student the option to
answer or turn the question into an
assignment.
4. Giving multi-step verbal
instructions
• Students often have difficulty
retaining multi-step instructions due
to working memory, attention, and
other issues.
Try this instead:
• Try to keep the number of steps low, or
give them one at time.
• `Write the instructions on the board to
provide a reference for students who
have difficulty remembering the steps.
5. Echoing students answers
• A common teaching habit that is a
huge time-waster is the repetition of
students’ answers by the teacher.
Try this instead:

• When a student gets an answer correctly,

affirm it with a simple one- or two-word
exclamation rather than repeating the
answer.
The longer we’ve used a
traditional technique, the harder
it is to break bad habits.
EFFECTIVE
CLASSROOM
TEACHING
STRATEGIES
1. Model as you teach.

When presenting a new

subject to your class, it
helps to include a
demonstration.
2. Make mistakes.

Make intentional mistakes

and ask the class to fix
them.
3. Work as a team.

Splitting the class up into

different teams to complete
an assignment is a teaching
strategy that works wonders
4. Encourage learning
from experience.
Getting out into the real world
offers a new perspective for
student and can help them gain a
more profound understanding of
what goes on in the classroom.
5. Let the students teach.

The goal of this strategy is to

get your students to display the
knowledge they have and to
share it with their classmates
6. Integrate technology into
the classroom.

Technology is perhaps the most

powerful tool you have at your
disposal.
7. Try graphic organizers.

Graphic organizers such as pie

charts and Venn diagrams are a
great way to display
information visually.
8. Cooperative Learning.

An instructional strategy in
which a small group of students
collaboratively work on a given
task.
9. Differentiated Instruction.

A teaching strategy that takes into

account that students from a single
classroom may be at different
starting points in their learning
process
10. Professional
Development
Investing some time to take up
professional development courses is
a great way to keep up with new
research and methods relevant to
the classroom.
Conclusion
Switching between teaching strategies
to suit the needs of the learners is a
great way to ensure that the learners
are meaningfully engaged and actively
participating in the classroom.
