Hin Why do mountaineers carry an oxygen cylinder while
climbing high mountains?

CB/VII/2122 Elements of Weather and Climate 4 of 15

Explanation

Air pressure is caused by

the weight of the air
particles pressing down.

As you go higher there are

less particles (lower
density) and so there is
less pressure.

CB/VII/2122 Elements of Weather and Climate 5 of 15

Explanation

The atmospheric pressure decreases with an increase in altitude.

The proportion of dust in the air, water vapour, etc. is higher in

the air closer to the surface of the earth and this proportion
decreases with increasing altitude.

Therefore, as one moves higher from the surface of the earth,

the air becomes thinner.

As the pressure decreases, the amount of oxygen available to

breathe also decreases. Due to this reason, mountaineers carry
an oxygen cylinder while climbing high mountains.

Exercise 2- HOTS question

If this is the case then why don’t we feel uncomfortable

while travelling through airplanes?

Exercise 2- HOTS question -
Answer

Airplanes create artificial pressure in the cabin so that

travellers remain comfortable while flying.

Factors influencing air pressure -TEMPERATURE

Atmospheric pressure decreases with increase in temperature.

This is because when temperature rises, air expands. The molecules

of air move far apart i.e. it becomes less dense and hence exerts
less pressure.

On the contrary, with the decrease in temperature the air gets

compressed and the space between molecules decreases i.e. it
becomes denser and exerts more pressure on the region.

Factors influencing air pressure - Water Vapour

Air containing water vapour is less dense than dry air. Thus,
moist air (containing water vapour) exerts less pressure than
the dry air.
