Basic Competences
3.4 Analyze linear functions (as straight line
equations) and interpret their graphs as related to
contextual problems

DEFINITION
• A straight line is a infinite collection of points side by side
• An Equation of a straight line is a comparison between the y
coordinate and the x coordinate of two points on a line
• A straight line can be expressed in an explicit and implicit
equation
• The straight line equation in an explicit, for example, y = mx
and y = mx + c, while the implicit straight line equation
is ax + by + c = 0.
+++
GRADIENT
• The gradient is the slope of a line. Gradient can be positive or negative
value. The positive gradient if the line is directed to the right and up,
while the negative gradient if the line goes to the left and down.

GRADIENT
∆ y = 6 units
∆ x = 6 units

Gradient(m) parallel to x-axis
In the picture beside, there are 2 lines parallel to
x-axis, k and l lines. Line k passes through the
points (–2, 2) and (3, 2), while line l passes
through the points (–1, –3) and (2, –3). Thus, the
slope of the two lines can be determined as
follows :

Gradient(m) parallel to y-axis
The two lines beside are lines that are parallel to y-axis. The first line
passes through the points (–1, 4) and (–1, –2), while the second line
passes through the points (2, 2) and (2, –3). So that the slope of the
two lines can be determined as follows:
