1
INTRODUCTION
Click to edit Master title style
In this module, you will learn different jumping
events in athletics. The Horizontal Jumps and
Vertical Jumps. Athletes are judged on either the
length or height of their jumps. In Horizontal Jumps,
the distance are measured from a board or marker,
and any athlete overstepping this mark is judged to
have fouled. In Vertical Jumps, an athlete must
clear his or her body over a crossbar without
knocking the bar off the bar of the supporting
standards. 2 2

LONG JUMP
Long Jump is a sport in which the performer exercises his strength and stamina. This sport is also known as broad jump.
Long Jump is a track-and-field event in which an athlete is required to jump to a distance as far as possible from a given take-off point.
Among all the athletes, the person who covers a maximum distance is usually declared as winner. The sport is played under both men
and women categories.

BRIEF HISTORY OF LONG JUMP

The traces of this sport lead us to ancient Greece. It was then played as Olympics pattern. The presence of this sport at
that time was believed to be due to its usefulness in warfare.

However, the practice methodology was completely

different from what we see today. In those days, players
used to take-off after running a short distance only. In
addition, they were supposed to carry a weight known as
halters to give them momentum while swinging forward.

In the late 1800, United States and Europe added this

sport into their sport events and soon in 1896 it was introduced
in modern Olympics for the first time. However, during this
period, the use of halters were completely eliminated. In 1928,
Olympics was organized in Holland in which women took part
for the first time. Soon after that event, the International
Association for Athletic Federation (IAAF) was formed to govern
this sport.

PLAYING ENVIRONMENT

Click to edit Master title style

In Long Jump, an
athlete has to jump as far as
possible from the take-off
point. Landing is generally
done on a sand pit. For more
comfort, the land is filled with
silicon sand. The run-up
before the jump is also
limited.

The runway for this sport should have a length of 40

meters and width of 1.22 meters. There is a take-off
board present before the landing area. It has the length
of 1.22 meters whereas width and depth are 20cm and
10 cm respectively. From at least one meter from the
landing area, there should be plasticine to record the
athlete’s foot-faulted prints. It is generally white in color.

The landing area

should be filled with silicon
sands. The length of the
field from the takeoff point
to the end should be at
least 10 meters, whereas
its width should be of 2.75
meters.

HOWto ITS
Click WORKtitle style
edit Master

Competitors sprint along a

runway and jump as far as
possible into a sandpit from
a wooden take-off board.
The distance travelled, from
the edge of the board to the
closest indentation in the
sand to it, is then measured.
1414

A foul is committed – and the jump is not measured – if an

athlete steps beyond the board.

Most championship competitions involve six jumps per

competitor, although usually a number of them, those with the
shorter marks, are often eliminated after three jumps. If
competitors are tied, the athlete with the next best distance is
declared the winner.

The flat sole of the spike

will also provide the
athlete with comfort and
leverage to take-off it the
correct position at the

also provide more
support to your ankle and
feet.

REPLACING SPIKES

Replacement spikes are just what
they sound like, spikes that replace the
ones that come with your shoes. They
come in a variety of sizes and lengths to
suit different needs. You might want to
use replacement spikes if you are
running on a surface that is different
from what your shoes were designed
for, or if you are looking for more grip or
traction than the spikes that come with
your shoes. The spikes on your shoes
will eventually wear down, so it is
important to replace them when
necessary.. 1919
SAND

These rakes have a special design
for their purpose with a strong
fiberglass handle and wide plastic
head. This means it can reach to all
corners of the landing pit to remove
any dirt or weeds. It’s important to get
rid of these as they may be
contaminating the sand in the pit. The
specialist design of the rake means
that the sand spreads evenly around
the landing area. This prevents injury
by providing a steady surface for the
athlete to land on. 2020
TAKE OFF BOARD
Click to edit Master title style

The take-off board is used by

jumpers to launch themselves as
far as possible forward into the
sand pit. The take-off board
designates at which point the
athlete must jump. The fault line
lies right behind the take-off board,
so any jump in which the athlete
steps past the take-off board is
deemed illegal.

Many athletes use measuring

tape to mark their run up out
in metres rather than pigeon
steps. This has its benefits,
as using a tape measure is
quick and easy to set up
during competition. It also
means that you are less likely
to measure it out wrong, as
the measurement always
starts from the same position
on the board. 2222
