PYRROLE

 It is not basic Physical properties:

 Protonated by very strong acid it  It is colourless liquid
occur at carbon-2.  It has odour of chloroform
 Proton acceptor not easily available  Boling point is 131°C
 Pyrrole is an unsaturated 5 numbered  It is very slightly soluble in H20,soluble in most organic
heterocyclic ring consists of nitrogen  It rapidly turns brown on exposure to air.
as hetero atom at 1st position.
Methods of preparation :

1.

By heating ammonium mucate with glycerol at 200 °C. At this temperature mucic acid and ammonia formed. The
Acid undergoes dehydration and decarboxylation and ring closure with ammonia.
2. By heating succinimide with Zinc dust

3. By warming succinic dialdehyde with ammonia.

4.By Treatment with Ammonia:

By passing a mixture of Furan, ammonia and steam over aluminium oxide catalyst at 480 °C -
490 °C.

5. By Acetylene

By passing a mixture of acetylene and ammonia through a red hot tube.

Reactions of Pyrrole:
1.Electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction :

Pyrrole undergoes electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction at C-2 position

e)Kolbe-Schmitt Carboxylation
2.Oxidation and Reduction:

3.Ring expansion reaction:

4.Ring opening reation:
Uses:
1.Procyclidin
An anticholinergic drug used to treat the stiffness, tremors(involuntary movements) and poor
muscle control of Parkinson’s disease
2.Nicotine
A stimulant and potent parasympathomimetic alkaloid. It is used for smoking cessation to
relieve withdrawal symptoms.
3.Proline
An amino acid, plays an important role in plants. It protects the plants from various stresses
and also helps plants to recover from stress more rapidly.
4.Glycopyrrolate
An anticholinergic drug which is used in peptic ulcer.
5.Atorvastatin
Belongs to a group of drugs know as Statins.Used to reduce high cholesterol level in blood
and also reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
