NURSING

RESEARCH

CHARACTERISTICS OF
NURSING RESEARCH
CHARLES Z. ARIOLA JR., MSN., LPT., RN.
Instructor
1. SYSTEMATIC
- The process of formulating the chapters and
elements of each.

MACRO SYSTEM- composition of chapters so

that they are organized in a logical and
scientific manner
MICRO SYSTEM- formulation of the detailed
contents of each chapter
2. OBJECTIVE
- Research is an objective process of
analyzing phenomena of importance to any of
the different professional and academic fields
or disciplines.
- Researcher must never produce results out
of nowhere.
- Results must be validated and verified
- Research must be never be based on baises
nor out of respect for any personality or
organization
3. FEASIBLE
- Any problem, extraordinary in nature that
directly or indirectly affects the profession is
a feasible problem of study.
- In settings like the community, school,
workplace and the hospital or clinic, unusual
phenomena happen and turn into potential
problems.
4. EMPIRICAL
- Research must have adequate evidence
discussing different variables used in the
study.
- The researcher must have evidence for the
details appearing in his/her paper.
- This also includes referencing of facts
gathered
5. CLEAR
- The choice of variable in the study should be
explained by the researcher which can be
done by enriching the review of literature or
by discussing the different theories on which
the selection of variables were based.
ROLES OF NURSES IN RESEARCH

1. Principal Investigator
2. Member of the Research Team
3. Identifier of Research Problems
4. Evaluator of Research Findings
5. User of Research Findings
6. Patient/Client Advocate during the Study
7. Subject/Respondent/Participant
FOUR CORE COMPETENCIES IN
RESEARCH
Legal Bases:

CHED Memorandum No. 14 series of 2009

CHED Memorandum No. 15 series of 2017
Board of Nursing (BON) Resolution No. 12,
series of 2005
CORE COMPETENCY 1: Gather Data
Using Different Methodologies
Indicators:
1. Identify researchable problems regarding
patient care and community health
2. identify appropriate methods of research
for a particular patient or community problem
3. combine qualitative and quantitative
nursing designs through simple explanation
of the phenomeno observed
4. analyze gathered data
CORE COMPETENCY 2: Recommend
actions for implementation
Indicators:
1. based on the analysis of data gathered,
recommend practical solutions appropriate to
the problem
CORE COMPETENCY 3: Disseminate
results of research findings
Indicators:
1. communicate results of research findings
to colleagues, patients, family and others
2. endeavor to publish research
3. submit research findings to own agencies
and other as appropriate
CORE COMPETENCY 4: Apply
research findings in nursing practice
Indicators:
1. utilize findings in research in the provision
of nursing care to individuals, groups and
communities
2. make use of evidence-based nursing to
ameliorate nursing practice
PURPOSES OF NURSING RESEARCH

1. NR provides scientific basis for the

practices or methodologies used in nursing
care management
2. NR is undertaken for the continuous
development of and further productivity in
health care
3. NR develops tools for assessing the
effectiveness of nursing interventions
PURPOSES OF NURSING RESEARCH

4. NR provides solutions to problems

concerning health maintenance, health
delivery and health care
5. NR develops and evaluates alternative
approaches to nursing education that enable
the students to gain broader knowledge and
specialized skills for safe practice
6. NR experience advances the personal and
professional qualifications to a nursing
practitioner
TYPES OF NURSING RESEARCH

1. BASIC OR PURE RESEARCH

- primarily concerned with generating
new knowledge or creating types of a theory

2. APPLIED RESEARCH
- concerned with using knowledge to
give immediate solutions to a problem
QUESTION

WHAT DO YOU THINK

NURSING RESEARCH IS,
APPLIED RESEARCH OR
BASIC RESEARCH?
According to Diers (1979), all nursing
researches are considered applied for
the following reasons:
1. The potential nursing research problem involves “a
difference that matters” which means problem comes
from the difference between what we know and what we
ought to know.
2. The potential nursing research problem addreses
conceptual issues and therefore has the potential to
contribute to theory development and to the body of
scientific knowledge
3. Potential research problem necessitates studying
phenomenon which researcher have the access to control
over- they being the active players in health care settings
