◦ I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to

my professor Dr Ranju Kumari, Dr Alok Kumar, Dr S.S
Singh who gave me a wonderful project on topic
population improvement in flowering crop.
◦ Secondly I would like to thank my friends who helped us a
lot during finalizing project on time.

◦ Population related terms
Terms of population
◦ Population :-organism which can intermate among themselves and live in same
environment
◦ Population genetics:-deals with understanding the dynamics of gene and
genotype frequencies in random mating population.
◦ Population breeding:-deals with objective of maximizing overall genetic
improvement through a series of cycle of recombination and selection.
Population improvement approaches
◦ Recurrent selection
◦ Disruptive selection
◦ Diallel selective mating
◦ Biparental mating
◦ Development of synthetic variety
◦ Development of composite variety
◦ Mas selection
◦ Bulk breeding
◦ Progeny selection
◦ Multiline varieties
Recurrent selection
Introduction

◦ Idea was suggested by Hayer and Garber in 1919.

◦ Procedure was described by Jenkins in 1940.
◦ Term is coined by hull in 1945.
◦ Hull defined “recurrent selection as reselection generation after
generation with interbreeding of select to provide for genetic
recombination”
◦ It is the best method for population improvement.
Types of recurrent selection

◦ Simple recurrent selection

◦ Recurrent selection for general combining ability.
◦ Recurrent selection for specific combining ability.
◦ Reciprocal recurrent selection.
