RISK BASED INSPECTION (RBI)

COURSE
API RP 581 METHODOLOGY
Part 3 – Inspection Planning Methodology
Inspection Planning Methodology
 Inspection planning based on risk assumes that at some point in time, the risk
of equipment will reach or exceed a user-defined area or financial risk target.
 When or before the user-defined risk target is reached, an inspection of the
equipment is recommended based on the component damage mechanism with
the highest DFs.
 Although sometimes inspection of a component does not reduce the inherent
risk, inspection provides improved knowledge of the current state of the
component and therefore reduces uncertainty.
Inspection Planning Methodology
Targets  Maximum level acceptable for continued operation without requiring a mitigating
action
 Risk Target  a level of acceptable risk that triggers the inspection (ft 2/year or $/year)

 POF Target  A frequency of failure or leak (number/year) that is considered

unacceptable and triggers the inspection
 DF Target  A damage state that reflects an unacceptable failure frequency factor greater
than generic and triggers the inspection
 COF Target  A level of unacceptable consequence based on owner user preference (CA
or CF)
 Thickness Target  A specific thickness (commonly the minimum thickness) considered
unacceptable and triggers the inspection
 Maximum Inspection Interval Target  A specific inspection frequency considered
unacceptable, triggering the inspection
