Summary of Duties
It is the duty of a Welding Inspector to ensure all the welding and
associated actions are carried out in accordance with the
specification and any applicable procedures.
A Welding Inspector must:
Observe
To observe all relevant actions related to weld quality
throughout production.
Record
To record, or log all production inspection points
relevant to quality, including a final report showing all
identified imperfections
Compare
To compare all recorded information with the
acceptance criteria and any other relevant clauses in the
applied application standard
WHAT IS A STANDARD?
•A standard can be defined as a set of technical
definitions and guidelines that function as instructions
for designers, manufacturers, operators, or users of
equipment.

•Standards, not having the force of law, are considered

voluntary and serve as guidelines. ASME publishes
standards and accredits users of standards to ensure
that they are capable of manufacturing products that
meet those standards.
What is a code?
•A standard is a code when it has been adopted
by one or more governmental bodies and is
enforceable by law, or when it has been
incorporated into a business contract.
•A body of law
Key definition
Specifications: a set of requirements to be satisfied by a material,
design, product, or service
Non-Conformance: A Non-Conformance (also known as a defect) is a
non-fulfilment of a requirement (e.g. contract, specification, drawing,
standards, etc)
Correction: An action to eliminate a Non-Conformance
Corrective Action: An action to eliminate the causes of Non-
Conformances in order to prevent their recurrence.
Preventive Action: An action to eliminate possible Non-Conformances
in order to prevent their occurrence.
Key definition
Specification : a detailed description or listing required attributes of
some items or operation. Requirement?
Acceptance Criteria: the requirements that have to be met for
operation to be assessed as complete.
Finding: Result of the evaluation of the collected acceptance evidence
against acceptance criteria. ,
Non Conformance (NC): negative finding, not comply to the
requirement
Defect : Non-conformance with the acceptance level of specified
requirement

Qualified VS Certified

What is the difference ?

What is better : Qualified or Certified ?
Why & when certificate is required ?

• CERTIFIED: an actual designation given by an entity

who is empowered to certify
• QUALIFIED : broader definition
Types of certificates related to
quality
• Company
• Personnel
• Procedure
• Product
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AUDIT AND INSPECTION

AUDIT INSPECTION
• Effort to find • Effort to find
nonconformity in nonconformity in an
applying managenent object
system
• Measure conformity of
• Measure conformity an object against
management system standard
application against
standard • Focus on object
• Focus on

system
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AUDIT AND INSPECTION

AUDIT INSPEKSI
• Method: • Method:

document check, checking in technical

verification, interview and/or in detail
and observation

• Long term • Short term

implementation implementation
Inspection VS Audit
•Inspection: evaluation or assessment on products, it
involves measurements or tests to conform the product
to meet the specified requirements and standard.
•Audit: evaluation on organization, system, process,
project or production line. Quality audits are performed
to verify conformance to standards through review of
objective evidence. A system of quality audits may
verify the effectiveness of a quality management system
and verify the existence of objective evidence showing
conformance to required processes.
Inspection
Inspection activities involve:
• Inspector / NDT personnel
• Inspection methods
• Procedure and specifications
• Measuring and test equipment
Examination VS Test
Examination: evaluation, investigation, focus on
the entire work
Test: assessment, usually focus on certain topic
INSPECTION VS EXAMINATION
• ASME Inspection vs Examination
- Section I sometimes incorrectly uses these terms
interchangeably.
- A revision item has been passed to ensure consistent use of
these terms.
• Inspection is performed by an Authorized Inspector to
verify compliance with Code requirements.
• Examinations are performed by the Manufacturer and
include non destructive examination (NDE).
• Each Manufacturer must contract with an Authorized
Inspection Agency (AIA) for inspection services.
Report VS Record
What is the difference?
Report : any informational work made by specific attention,
prepared to comply as required basis (written or oral)
Record: process to capturing data or translating information to a
format and stored on some storage
What is Quality?

Different Views of Quality
• User-based: better performance, more features

• Manufacturing-based: conformance to standards/

specification, making it right the first time

• Product-based: specific and measurable attributes of

the product
