BASICS OF CNC
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) is a manufacturing process where computers
control machine tools to create precise and complex parts from raw materials.
It involves automated tool movements guided by coded instructions, enhancing
efficiency and accuracy in various industries like manufacturing and engineering
5 AXIS CNC MACHINE
5-axis machining is a manufacturing process used in CNC (Computer
Numerical Control) machining, which involves cutting and shaping
materials like metal or plastic. Unlike traditional 3-axis machining,
where the tool moves along three linear axes (X, Y, and Z), 5-axis
machining adds two rotary axes.
UNDERSTANDING AXIS IN MACHINING
1.X-Axis: Horizontal movement from left to right.

2.Y-Axis: Horizontal movement from front to back.

3.Z-Axis: Vertical movement up and down.

4.A-Axis (Rotary Axis): Rotational movement around the X-axis,

allowing for tilting or rotating the workpiece.

5.B-Axis (Rotary Axis): Rotational movement around the Y-axis,

enabling additional tilting or rotation.
TYPES OF 5 AXIS MACHINES
• HEAD/HEAD
• TABLE/HEAD
• TABLE/TABLE
Head/Head
• The CNC machine as a rotary axis located in the head of the machine.
• The macine has a fixed table that holds the workpiece in place during
machining.
• Head/Head CNC machines are suitable for producing large parts.
Table/Head

• This setup includes two rotary axes, one on the head and one on the
rotary table.
• The rotary axis on the head has a limited range due to its position.
• In contrast, there is no limit to the range of the rotary axis placed on
the table.
• However, the design of the CNC machine restricts the number of
items it can produce as the part or workpiece relies on the rotary axis.
Table/Table
• This setup has both rotary axis on the table.
• There is no limit to the range of rotary axis. This makes this type of
machine ideal for machining undercuts.
• It is less suitable for machining large or heavy components.
• It is slower than other machines.
ADVANTAGES
• Higher Precision and Accuracy
• Improved Production Speed (Lead Times)
• Fewer Setups
• More Complex Part Geometries
• Better Surface Finishes
• Improved Drilling Capabilities
DISADVANTAGES
• COMPLEX GEOMETRICS
• REDUCED SETUPS
• IMPROVED SURFACE FINISH
• REDUCED TOOL INTERFERENCE
• VERSATILITY
APPLICATIONS
• AEROSPACE INDUSTRY
• MEDICAL DEVICE MANUFACTURING
• MARINE INDUSTRY
• PROTOTYPING AND RAPID MANUFACTURING
• ARCHITECTRAL AND ARTISTIC CREATION
• AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY
CAM SOFTWARES
• MASTERCAM
• Siemens NX CAM
• CAM WORKS
• ESPRIT
• VERICUT
FUTURE TRENDS IN 5 AXIS
MACHINIG
• Hybrid Tech :integration with 3D printing for complex parts
• Multi- Material:Handling multiple material in a set up
• Advanced Material:Adaptation to composites and ceramics
• Green Machining :Energy-efficient and eco-friendly
CONCLUSION
5-axis machining stands at the forefront of precision
manufacturing, enabling intricate and multifaceted
part production across industries. With evolving
technologies, it promises increased automation,
integration with advanced processes, and optimized
toolpaths. Its pivotal role in shaping efficient,
accurate, and innovative manufacturing processes
underscores its ongoing significance in modern
production.
