INTRODUCTION
Fire hazard in Building Services can be defined as the potential of accidental or intentional
fire to threaten life, structural and property safety in buildings
Fire
causes, dangers AND mitigation
In buildings, fire can pose significant dangers to both the occupants and
property. Here are some dangers that are associated with fires in buildings
1. Threat to human life
2. Smoke inhalation
3. Rapid spread
4. Structural collapse
5. Burns and injuries
6. Property damage
Fire
causes, dangers AND mitigation
There are several common causes of fires in buildings and these include
Faulty wiring
faulty appliances
smoking
cooking accidents
and
overheating of equipment among others
Ways of preventing fires in buildings
SAND BUCKETS
*These are a simple and traditional fire-fighting tool that is used for
small-scale fire suppression.
*They consist of a sturdy bucket filled with sand or a similar non-
combustible material.
*When a fire breaks out, sand buckets can be a useful tool to control
and extinguish the flames, especially in situations where other
firefighting equipment may not be readily available or practical.
SAND BUCKETS
*Fire extinguishers are portable devices designed to suppress or extinguish small fires.
*They contain a firefighting agent, typically a chemical or a combination of chemicals,
that is expelled from the extinguisher when activated.
*Fire extinguishers are an essential tool in fire safety and can be found in various
settings, including homes, offices, and public buildings.

FACTORS THAT DETERMINE LOCATION OF
SAND BUCKETS
2. Exit Routes: Fire doors are often used in exit routes, such as stairwells and corridors, to create a protected path for
occupants to evacuate during a fire emergency. These doors help maintain the integrity of escape routes, ensuring
that occupants can safely exit the building.
3. Fire Resistance Ratings: Fire doors are rated based on their ability to withstand fire for a specific duration, typically
measured in minutes. Common ratings include 20 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes, and 90 minutes. The selection of
fire door ratings depends on factors such as building occupancy, fire hazards, and local building codes.
Alarm bells
*A fire alarm bell is an active fire protection component. It uses audible stimuli to alert
occupants.
* Manual call points are used to initiate an alarm signal, and operate by means of simple
button press.
*The bell should be mounted a minimum of 8ft. From the floor or as close to the ceiling
as possible.
Fire proofing
* Is the process of making a material or structure fire-resistant.
*This can be done by coating it with a fire resistant material such as mortar, cement, or fire-
proofing spray.
*It is often on steel structures and concrete to make them more resistant to fire.
Types of fire proofing
1. Concrete fire-proofing
Concrete is a fire resistant material because it is non-combustible, non-toxic, and has low thermal
conductivity.
It does not easily transfer heat and does nit react easily with other substances.
Types of fire proofing
2. Wood
Tis can be done by coating wood with fire retardant or intumescent paint designed for wood.
There are six main types of fire-resistant building materials
Flame treated natural products, fire resistant glass for windows, concrete, stucco, gypsum and
brick.
