INTRODUCTION

Applied linguistics is a field of

study that looks at how linguistics
can help understand real-life
problems in areas such as
psychology, sociology and
education. It can be compared with
theoretical linguistics, which looks
at areas such as morphology,
phonology and lexis.
 METHODS IN “APPLIED LINGUISTICS”
Research Methods in Applied Linguistics: Quantitative, Qualitative and Mixed Methodologies
Quantitative methodology is the
dominant research framework in the
social sciences. It refers to a set of
strategies, techniques and assumptions
used to study psychological, social and
economic processes through
the exploration of numeric patterns.
Quantitative research gathers a range of
numeric data. Some of the numeric data
is intrinsically quantitative (e.g.
personal income), while in other cases
the numeric structure is imposed (e.g.
‘On a scale from 1 to 10, how depressed
did you feel last week?’). The collection
of quantitative information allows
researchers to conduct simple to
extremely sophisticated statistical
analyses that aggregate the data (e.g.
averages, percentages), show
relationships among the data (e.g.
Qualitative research focuses in
understanding a research query as a
humanistic or idealistic approach.
Though quantitative approach is a more
reliable method as it is based upon
numeric and methods that can be made
objectively and propagated by other
researchers. Qualitative method is used
to understand people's beliefs,
experiences, attitudes, behavior, and
interactions. It generates non-numerical
data.
Mixed methods research requires a purposeful
mixing of methods in data collection, data analysis
and interpretation of the evidence. The key word is
‘mixed’, as an essential step in the mixed methods
approach is data linkage, or integration at an
appropriate stage in the research process. Purposeful
data integration enables researchers to seek a more
panoramic view of their research landscape, viewing
phenomena from different viewpoints and through
diverse research lenses. For example, in a
randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluating a
decision aid for women making choices about birth
after caesarean, quantitative data were collected to
assess knowledge change, levels of decisional
conflict, birth choices and outcomes. Qualitative
narrative data were collected to gain insight into
women’s decision-making experiences and factors
that influenced their choices for mode of birth.

Applied linguistics is a multi-disciplinary aggregation and involves a wide

range, and the research fields are complex and diversified.

In view of these, in foreign language teaching, we should introduce more teaching theories in
teaching process on the basis of comprehensiveness, openness and scientificity of applied
linguistics so as to make foreign language teaching process more diversified and teaching
strategies more flexible and make linguistic theory reflect its huge values in actual teaching
process.

Such development trend has great enlightenment for

theoretical and practical research of applied linguistics. To be

thorough theoretical system. At the thought level, it may be occupied by
ideology and other political forms. In practice, it may focus on education of
language teachers and future teacher education.
