EXAMINATION INVIGILATION: CONDUCT AND

PRACTICES.

ABSTRACT
Examination is an important tool use to evaluate
student in this country today. Good examination
conduct provides the students with conducive
environment which can results in better
performance. The high standard of students
performance already attained by the institution
can be maintained when those concerned with
examination continue to be devoted and
committed to the responsibility.
1.0 INTRODUCTION
Examination is an important activity in
educational institutions.
Tertiary institutions conduct examination at the
end of each semester.
Examination is a critical yardstick in measuring
and determining standard and quality of teaching,
learning and imparting skills to the students.
A well conducted examination is the best defence
against cheating (Aghenta and Lassa, 2001)
The responsibility of the invigilator is crucial to
the success and creditability of an examination.
Invigilators are very useful in ensuring that
examination are conducted with the best
practices.
Interest of most institutions is to maintain the
high standard of students performance.
It is therefore important for the invigilators to
maintain strict monitoring and supervision
during examination.
Proper examination conduct is strongly
influenced by wide range of examination
administration and personnel.
1.1Good Examination Conduct
Provide controlled environment which gives all
students equal opportunity(Erika, 2023)

1.2 Examination Administration


Preparation of examination venue.
Arrival time for the invigilators and students.
Students should be allocated seats.
Provision of clock in the examination hall.
1.3 Examination Instructions
Instructions should be readout clearly.
Candidates should be told to turn off their cell
phones and any other electrical gadgets.
To complete required information on their
booklets such as Reg. number, course title etc.
Give other general information such as no
smoking, eating, drinking etc (Ubc, 2023)
2.0 INVIGILATION
Is solely the responsibility of academic staff.

2.1 Invigilator
The purpose of invigilator is to support chief
invigilator during exams.
Invigilators owe the institution a moral
commitement to perform their duties of invigilation.
It is essential to have more than one invigilator in an
examination hall (FPT,K/N, 2018)
Invigilators must not be absent from invigilation

Duties of invigilators.
 Assisting with setting up of the examination venue.
Directing candidates to their seat.
No communication between the candidates.
Invigilators should move round the exams hall quietly.
Taking of attendance during exams and escorting
students out of exam hall.
Collecting of examination scripts at the end of exams.
Ensure that scripts collected tally with the number of
students.
No student should leave with the examination scripts
Candidates should cross out the unused spaces.
Candidates must submit the exam script and sign out.
Invigilator must submit exams scripts to the
examination office.
2.2 Chief Invigilators
 Should report to the examination venue at least 30mins
before the starting of examination.
 Collect all the examination materials from the school
examination office.
 Chief invigilator ensure that invigilators invigilate properly.
 Ensure that persons not having anything to do with
invigilation are not allowed in the exam venue.
 Shall assist in the students verification.
 Chief invigilators should receive and submit all answer
scripts.
 Chief invigilators should complete all the necessary forms in
the school examination office after submission of scripts.
2.3 Examination Supervisors
 Chief lecturers are designated as examination supervisors.
 They are assigned certain examination venue.
 They are excepted to be at the exam venue at the right
time.
 Duties of examination supervisors:
 Assigned the responsibility of overseeing prompt and
smooth conduct of examination.
 Ensure that appropriate forms are completed by the
invigilators.
 Occasionally checking students identification cards.
 Noting any invigilator that is absent from his/her duty
post.
 Assign the invigilators in collection of examination
3.0 EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE
Is said to be deliberate activity, default or other practice
that compromise the integrity of examination process
(Akanni and Odofin, 2015)
Inappropriate Behaviours:
 Looking at another candidate's material or answer
sheet .
Criminal offence such as bribery.
Assisting candidates in examination.
Causing or allowing a cell phone to ring.
Attempting to take examination material outside from the
examination hall.
Failure to obey examination instructions .
Attempting to seat for examination for another person
3.1 Handling of Examination Malpractice
Invigilators need to be alert and committed to
invigilation.
Talk to the students quietly.
If possible change him/her to another seat.
Do not send the student out or tear his/her examination
script.
If the students proofs sturborn, you can complete
examination malpractice form for him/her.
Inappropriate behaviours of the students must be handled
maturely
Report of the examination malpractice should be
submitted to the Dean through the school Examination
Officer.
4.0 CONCLUSION
Good examination provides controlled
environment and give all the candidates equal
opportunity to independently demonstrate their
learning.
Better performance of students can be
maintained through good examination conduct
which is enhanced by the experience acquired
during regular invigilation processes.
