Group Design Projects

Briefing
Welcome
• Module element overview
• Project:
– Site
– Involved parties
– Brief
• Assessment
• Site reconnaissance visit
Module overview
CIVE 32221 – Individual with group project

• Group component totals 25% of overall module grade

• Group project
– 9 groups (2xDegree apprentice and 7x Full time students)
– Groups of 8 or 9
• Based on a real problem
• Focus on getting the ‘big picture’ right.
– More Engineering Principles and less detailed design
• Student led
– Limited direct teaching (needed to meet module leaning outcomes!)
– Chance to research / choose own path
Module Staff
Dr Paul Beetham (module leader for BEng Group)
paul.beetham@ntu.ac.uk

Mike Rogers (hourly paid lecturer)

michael.rogers@ntu.ac.uk

Before sending an email with a technical query:

1. Check the FAQs on NOW
2. Discuss within the group to see if you can self solve
3. Understand there may be a delay of 3 working days for a reply
4. Copy in all group members and staff members to the email

As part of the role play imagine we are charging you £150 / hour (this is Dr
Beetham’s NTU consultancy charge out rate!) to respond to emails.
Industry Input

Project is run with Industry partner

Ben Wright (Galliford Try)

• Guest lecture (next week)
• Consultation sessions

Alex Marsters (Severn Trent)

• Guest lecture (next week)
• Assessment feedback
Project – CSO discharge on Shakespeare
Street
Problem: Nottingham’s sewers are combined (100+ years old)

- When it rains heavily the sewers are ‘full up’

- If the Surface water has nowhere to go = flooding of properties /
streets
CSO at A60/Canal St. junction
- CSO’s reach their max incoming flow
(95Litre /second is the limit)

Weir over and discharge to their outfall

(The Canal leads to River Trent)
CSO discharge causes pollution
Both the Canal and River Trent
water quality can be seriously
affected

- CSO discharges are become more frequent

• Urbanisation
• More extreme weather

https://environmentagency.blog.gov.uk/2020/07/02/combined-sewer-overflows-explained/

These fines are

going up and up!
Client
• Severn Trent Water need to improve the >12 CSO discharges
per annum which is causing ‘failing’ River status

• Appointed your group as ‘scheme designer’ to undertake

1. Optioneering exercise (design rainfall event frequency
and potential engineering solutions)

2. Outline costed proposal (single preferred solution)

• Assuming a 1 hour storm event

(Note this is a fictional flood scenario)

Design flood situation
Scenario – 1hour design flood
Assuming the below

- Must achieve Minimum of ‘good’

- Volume of water ‘surcharging’ the system can be calculated
- Where will it go? (where will you put it?)
- See brief appendix for further info about sewers and max
storm flow rates

Site Walkover
Week 12 has been set aside for walkover the area to consider
viable options:
• Take photos / notes
• Look for obstructions / limitations / affected parties
• Public/student accessible areas only (no trespassing)
Assessment
Optioneering presentation – Week 15
10% of Module Mark

A 12 minute optioneering TEAMS presentation which:

• Proposes and appraises at least three potential solutions for
CSO discharge reducton
• Defines
– civil engineering challenges
– Limitations
– Stakeholders

A short Q&A session will follow.

Assessment
Final design presentation – Week 19

10% of Module Mark

A 12 minute teams presentation of the group’s final ‘priced’
proposal.
Groups must clearly and succinctly explain and reason their final
proposal.

A short Q&A session will follow.

Assessment 3 - Minutes
To encourage students to:
• Meet and communicate regularly!
• Assign tasks / deadlines

5% of the assessment relates to Meeting minutes (see GBA

criteria)

Also be aware individual grades may be used

Groups

• Self selected
• We will sort now full groups of 9
• Or <9 and be prepared to be assigned extra students
• Ungrouped students after the session
– Talk to people in seminar groups
– Email if struggling
