What is Meditation?

Meditation is an experience of relaxing the body,

quieting the mind, and awakening the spirit.

Meditation is a practice that involves focusing or

clearing your mind using a combination of mental and

physical techniques.
Understanding the Science of Meditation

NEUROLOGICAL EFFECTS OF IMPACT ON BRAIN WAVES STUDIES ON MEDITATION

MEDITATION AND BRAIN STRUCTURE AND COGNITIVE ABILITIE
Neurological Effects of
Meditation

•It can strengthen areas of your brain

responsible for memory, learning, attention
and self-awareness. The practice can also help
calm down your sympathetic nervous system.
Over time, mindfulness meditation can
increase cognition, memory and attention.
Impact on Brain Waves
and Brain Structure
•Research indicates that meditation
tends to lead to an increase in the
production of theta and alpha waves,
which are the brain wave frequencies
associated with enhanced learning
abilities and overall mental well-being.
Studies on Meditation and
Cognitive Abilities

•On the basis of a growing body of research that

shows that meditation has positive effects on
cognition in younger and middle-age adults,
meditation may be able to offset normal age-related
cognitive decline or even enhance cognitive function
in older adults.
Exploring Different Meditation
Techniques
• Mindfulness Meditation
• Loving-Kindness (Metta) Meditation
• Transcendental Meditation (TM)
• Guided Visualization
• Mantra Meditation
Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness meditation is a mental training

practice that teaches you to slow down racing
thoughts, let go of negativity, and calm both
your mind and body.
Loving-Kindness (Metta) Meditation

Loving - kindness meditation (LKM) focuses

on generating loving-kindness toward oneself
and others in a graded way to include all
living beings eventually, both seen and
unseen, across the cosmos.
Transcendental Meditation (TM)

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a form of silent

mantra meditation developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The TM technique involves the use of a silently-used
sound called mantra, and is practiced for 15–20 minutes
twice per day.
Guided Visualization
Guided visualization is a meditation or
mindfulness technique where a person uses
their senses and imagination to help them
connect with something in their mind. This
can include a feeling — such as self-
confidence or calmness.
Mantra Meditation

•Mantra is a Sanskrit term, with “man”

meaning “mind” and “tra” meaning
“release.”
•Think of a mantra — a word or phrase
you repeat during meditation — as a tool
to help release your mind. It can make a
lot of difference, especially if you have
trouble concentrating or getting in the
right frame of mind.
• A simple practice available for all, meditation takes
us on a path of deeper self-realization, greater
acceptance, and more heartfelt living.
Conclusion • In meditation, a person learns to focus attention.
• A key aspect of meditation is to learn to settle your
mindful awareness on one single thing.
