Structure of the Skin
On some parts of your body, the skin is very thin. On other parts of your body, the skin
is somewhat thick. The skin is made up of outer layer and inner layer.
Outer Layer
The outer layer is the epidermis. Cells in this layer are tough and flat. The top part is
made up of dead cells. These cells are worn off as they dry and get flaky. Your fingernails and
toenails are thickened and hardened epidermis. Since they are dead cells, you feel no pain
when you cut them.
Inner Layer
The inner layer of the skin is the dermis. It is made up of living cells like blood vessels,
oil glands and sweat glands. Blood vessels help nourish the skin. Oil glands produce oil to
make skin shiny and keep from drying. Sweat glands produce sweat or perspiration to keep our
body cool.
There are also Fatty tissues that provides the body with heat and protect our internal
organs. The skin also receptors. It picks up the five skin sensations such as cold, heat, touch,
pain and pressure. The nerves carry messages to the brain. The brain tells how object feels.
