Steps in Giving Presentation
1.Plan
2. Prepare
3. Practice
4. Present
Structuring and Planning Considerations:

1. Who are your audience?

2. What’s the purpose of

your presentation?

3. What is the MAIN

MESSAGE you want
them to take away?
Planning
• Why are you doing the talk? Be clear about your purpose
• Find out how big your audience is likely to be & what sort of
group
• Make notes about your subject
• Don’t write your talk word for word
• Use small pieces of paper and number them
• Powerpoint has a notes & timing feature which may help
• Time your talk & practice it
• Then practice it again
Presentation Techniques
Think of Threes
1. Tell people what you’re going to say

2. Tell them

3. Tell them what you’ve said

“He was looking up into the sky all
the time he was speaking and Alice
thought this decidedly uncivil”
Lewis Carroll

• Lack of experience • Quick to disappear

• Lack of preparation
The more you practice:
• Lack of enthusiasm • better you feel
• Negative self-talk • more you want to do

• Room
• Everything
• Technology
It’s not about you
Focus on your goal Becoming Confident
• what you are going to say •Be over-prepared
Audience

•Rehearse and practice
• Interesting •Know your subject
But most importantly…… •Use relaxation techniques
Relax •Be positive +++

• body language

Smile

Show your passion

Presentation Techniques
• Pace of delivery
• Vary style
• Move about
• Vary pitch
• Use notes
• Avoid annoying habits
• Use props, but don‘t overdo it
Techniques – teaching aids
• Flip chart for diagrams, pictures, key points
• Ohps/powerpoint - serve the same purpose (more
permanent, better for a large audience)
• Powerpoint – pros and cons on next slide
• Demonstration - get your audience involved
Powerpoint

Advantages Disadvantages
• Quick, easy & simple • Can be tedious
• Prepare in advance • Not very dynamic
• Good for large • Easy to overload with
audience information
• Can include pictures • Be careful with animations
& graphics easily
• Tendency to read word for
• Something to look at word

Presentation Do’s
• Take a deep breath
• Speak clearly
• Make small cards to remind yourself of topics
(number them!)
• Be aware of where your audience is - are you
facing all of them?
• Smile, have fun
• Be yourself and project your personality
• Remember - no-one knows how you feel or
what you think
• Remember - The audience is on your side!

Presentation Don’ts

• Rush what you’re trying to say – SLOW DOWN

• Read off a sheet of paper word for word
• Fiddle with things - its irritating!
• Use inappropriate language for your audience
• Panic
Dealing with Questions
TRACT technique
1. Thank the questioner
2. Repeat the question
3. Answer the question
4. Check with the questioner if they are satisfied
5. Thank them again
Giving Criticism
• Step 1: Listen to Criticism
• Step 2: Decide on Truth
• Step 3: Respond Assertively
• Passive Response
• Directly Aggressive Response
• Indirectly Aggressive Response
In Summary…
• Most talks go according to plan
• But, you must actually plan unless you are very experienced
• You have the support of your audience
• Most common mistakes are avoidable
• The world won’t end if it does go wrong – just correct yourself and
carry on
