Urethral
catheterization is a
medical procedure
involving the
insertion of a
catheter through the
urethra into the
bladder to facilitate
urine drainage.
There are 3 main types of catheters:
1. FOLEY CATHETER (INDWELLING CATHETER)
Flexible tube inserted through the urethra into the bladder to drain urine.
Stays in place for days or weeks
Attached to the drainage bag or directly to the toilet
Must be initiated by a healthcare proffesional
2. CONDOM CATHETERS
•Is a sheath-like device that fits over the penis, functioning as an
external collecting system for urine.
3. INTERMITTENT CATHETERS
•A catheter used periodically to drain the bladder. It’s inserted when needed and
removed once the bladder is emptied.
•Often designed for one-time use and discarded after use
PURPOSES:
1. To relieve discomfort due to bladder distention or to provide gradual
decompression of a distended bladder.
2. To assess the amount of residual urine if the bladder empties
incompletely.
3. To obtain a urine specimen.
4. To empty the bladder completely prior to surgery.
