First microscope: zancharias janssen (1590)

Then by Robert hooke.

Robert hooke: observed that the cork piece had a

large number of compartments joined together
in a honeycomb- like structure. He named them
cell.
Facts about cell discovery:
• Robert hooke explained his observations in a book namely
micrographia. cella=small hollow spaces or compartments.
• Anton von leeuweunhoek 1674: was first to observe and sketch
different living organisms
• N.grew: cell is a unit of structure of organisms, 1682.
• Matthias schleiden and Theodore schwann (1838 and 1839
respectively): basic structural and functional unit of plants and
animals is cell.
