Delhi Sultanate
India witnessed a series of Muslim rulers. Following is a timeline of various Muslim rulers of
Delhi sultanate period and Mughal Empire, who ruled India during different centuries. The
years mentioned below are all in AD. This timeline highlights important rulers and happenings
during their lifetime. It also Focus light on the series in which they followed each other or
accessed the throne.
THE RULERS AND ARCHITECTURE OF DELHI SULTANATE PERIOD (1 206-1 526 AD)

The Sultanate period can be broadly classified among the five different periods/dynasties. The
dates mentioned reflect the period during which, a particular style fully flourished under a
particular dynasty. The five dynasties are as mentioned below:

 Slave dynasty or Qutbi dynasty (1206—1290 AD)


 Khilji dynasty (1290-4320 AD)
 Tughlaq dynasty (1320—1414 AD)
 Sayyid dynasty (1414—1451 AD)
 Lodi dynasty (1451—1526 AD)
The story of Sultanate period starts with “Slave dynasty” 1206 AD with its
headquarters at Lahore. Qutb-ud-din Aibak was the first ruler of slave
dynasty.
711 AD
Muhammad ibn Qasim, a governor from Basra (city in Iraq) invaded Sindh with 15000
men, occupied area from Karachi (city in Pakistan) to Multan (city in Pakistan).Multan which is
now in Pakistan 1st city to experience Muslim rulers in India.
879 AD – 980 AD
Multan was capital of Arab states
1001 AD
Mahmud of Ghazna (city in Afghanistan),Ghaznavid dynasty raids in India, achieves victory
near Peshawar(city in Pakistan). He stretches a huge Empire from Punjab to Khorasan(city in
Iran). He made his capital at Ghazna.
1176 AD
Muhammad of Ghur (Afghanistan) invaded India. He came from region east of Herat
(Afghanistan)and overtook Sindh.
1181 AD
Muhammad of Ghur overtook Peshawar.
1191 AD
Muhammad of Ghur was defeated by Prithvi Raj III, a Prince of Ajmer (Rajasthan).
1192 AD
Muhammad of Ghur attacked again and defeated the Rajput’s, captured Ajmer.
1193 AD
General Qutb-ud-din Aibak, slave and Deputy of Muhammad of Ghur, captured Delhi.
1206 AD
Qutb-ud-din Aibak, a Turk, gained power as Muhammad of Ghur was assassinated. He founded
the “Slave dynasty”, headquarters at Lahore. He controlled all the territories of Ghurid except
Afghanistan.
1210 AD
Qutb-ud-din Aibak died after an injury at Lahore. Aram shah his son succeeded him and ruled
for a short time.
