INTRODUCTION
Lawn is the heart of a garden and holds
pivotal importance in adding beauty to the
garden.

The beauty of any landscape is due primarily to the lawn; the

lawn is foreground of the house and of every landscape picture
and the setting for architectural and garden features.

Lawn serves as a base for a flower bed, a border, a shrubbery or

a specimen tree. Besides having monetary value, lawn
possesses aesthetic value of reducing tension of the mind after
a day’s hard work.

No garden is complete without lawn.

STEPS IN LAWN PREPRATION
SELECTION OF SITE SOIL PREPERATION OF GROUND

MANURING AND CONSOLIDATION LEVELING AND DRAINAGE OF GROUND

SELECTION OF SITES
The site selected should have simple sunshine. There should not be big trees near the lawn site as they
cast shadows, and during leaf fall, the leaves falling on the
lawn make difficult the task of keeping the lawn clean.

The soil depth should be about 25-30 cm.

SOIL
Soil with rich in humus and water holding capacity is most suitable

Slightly acidic soil ( pH :5.5-6.0) helps in good growth of lawn

If pH is lower than 5.5 , lime stone or slaked lime can be added

PREPERATION OF GROUND

The preparation of site includes digging, leveling and enriching the soil with organic
manures or by amending with fertile soil.

If the soil is very heavy, coarse sand may be added by Provision of drainage for excess rain water should be made if
removing subsoil to a depth of 20 cm. The ideal soil pH the ground is not sloppy.
should be 5.0 to 5.6.
If it is very acidic 500 g/m2 lime should be added and to
clayey loam or alkaline soil gypsum of the same quantity may
be added
MANURING AND CONSOLIDATION
• If the soil is originaly fertile ,it is better not to apply bulky organic
manure into the lawn.

Where the soil is infertile well decomposed cow dung or

farmyard manure should be applies to the ground at 100kg
per 100 sq meter & throughly mixed with the top soil upto a
depth of 10-15 cm

The disturbed soil needs time to settle. To ensure ensure

consolidation, the ground need to be watered 2-3 times in
interval

Drainage and levelling: A slope from centre to edge facilitates

drainage of excess water and maintain lawn in good condition

Drainage system is not necessary for small area with non sticky
so
LEVELLING AND DRAINAGE OF THE GROUND
After settling of soil, the surface should be levelled by filling depression and by repeated rolling.

Good drainage is also essential for maintaining a lawn in good

condition.
In small lawns where the soil is not so sticky, special
arrangement of drainage may not be necessary. But for the
bigger lawns, it is always advisable to have surface drains at the
ends or sides of he lawns with a proper outlet for the excess
water.
