Explanation
■ Skimming and Scanning are both reading
strategies that allow readers to retrieve
information more rapidly than reading from
the first page until the last.
■ Skimming is different from Scanning. Here
are the differences:
SKIMMING SCANNING

USAGE

■ People scan when they have read the book but
want to go back to it to find something, like
when you know you’ve read something in a
book but doesn’t know where it is specifically.
People who scan also have specific keywords
in mind. For example, if you want to find info
about the definition of contemporary art, your
keyword would be: definition, defined, means,
contemporary, or contemporary art. And you
will scan for those words in the book.
