THERMAL INSULATIONS - Application & Inspection

1- INTRODUCTION

• When a material or combination of

materials is wrapped around a pipe or
Equipment to slow down the flow of heat
energy, it is called thermal insulation.
• As a result, thermal insulation helps in
reducing energy losses and minimizing
energy costs. The piping or Equipment
must be insulated in accordance with the
insulation class, operating temperature,
and insulation thickness.

2- THERMAL INSULATIONS

Thermal insulation system has four primary functions:

• Personal Protection (PP) – Preventing potentially hazardous human

contact with the exposed pipe system’s surface.

• Heat Conservation (HC) – The substantial reduction in the heat energy

transfer from the pipe system’s surface. As a result, pipe insulation helps to
save energy.

• Cold Insulation (CI) – The prohibition of moisture development and

accumulation on the pipe system’s surface due to frost on cold surfaces.

• Insulation as Fireproofing

2.1 Personnel Protection

• Where thermal insulation is not

required, shall be in the form of
metal caging.

• The standoff distance shall be

enough to prevent the metal
barrier from exceeding a maximum
touch temperature of 140°F
(60°C).

2.1 Personnel Protection

• Required distances, based

on operating temperature
and item size, are shown in
Table 1 below.

2.2 Heat Conservation (HC)

• For heat conservation purpose, once considered all the different

insulation material alternatives indicated in CRISP GS 14-01-01 Table 1,
Aerogel Blanket has been selected. See approved products below:

2.2.1 Insulation Jacketing

Aluminum metal clad and Vapor Fas are considered as the weather
barrier material to be placed over the aerogel blankets.
The main advantages of this kind of insulation jacketing is that it has zero
permeability and it is considered as a vapor barrier, including the overlap
seams.

2.2.2 Vapor-Fas Jacketing Application - KEYS

• Applicators shall be familiar with

concepts of fabricating insulation and
jacketing
• Insulation must be fully installed and free
of moisture, dust, dirt contaminants
• Avoid getting dust from insulation on
the Vapor-Fas adhesive during
insulation – particularly the overlap
portion
• Expose only a small amount of
adhesive as you go,
• Use the squeegee to press firmly to the
insulation surface
• Narrower width of Vapor-Fas may be
easier to handle with less wrinkling

11
THERMAL INSULATIONS - Application & Inspection

Vapor-Fas Jacketing Application - Guide

• Cut lengths of Vapor-Fas to allow for

75 mm overlaps in both longitudinal
and circumferential directions

• Apply pieces on the bottom first

working up to higher pieces

• Exterior flat surfaces must be sloped

for water drainage

REDUCER
• Cut feathered tabs to cover over reducers
• Length = height of the insulation termination + 25 mm onto lower surface
• Starting at bottom seal each over the butt end and onto smaller pipe
• Cover feathered tabs on lower piece with a 100 mm wide tape strip
to ensure seal and neater finish.

ROUNDED ELBOWS

• Cut gores using fish patterns

used for metal jacketing
• Ensure to oversize the gores
to allow for overlapping each
piece
• After installing goes tape
over each seam with
additional strips
• In some cases tape strips
may be used but it will leave
wrinkles and be difficult to
apply

RIGHT ANGLE ELBOWS

1. Measure the circumference of the pipe diameter

using the tape measure
2. Draw a line of the circumference onto the
template and put additional 75mm for the
overlap
3. Measure the length of the pipe from the tip of the
weld point to the edge of the pipe. This will be
the line measurement at the center of the
circumference template
4. Measure the length at the bottom part of the pipe
from weld point to edge and mark line 1 and 2
5. Draw a curved lines as the basic template shown
in the photo.
6. From the template, make two sets for the top and
bottom piece.
A. with seams for feathering
B. without seam to overlap.

Tee’s

1. Measure the circumference of the pipe diameter

using the tape measure.
2. Draw a line of the circumference onto the
template and put additional 75mm for the
overlap.

3. Draw 4 equal lines to mark line numbers 1,2,3,4 and 5.

4. Measure the center of the weld point up to edge of the
pipe and mark the template line 2 and 4.
5. Measure the sides up to the edge of the pipe and mark
the template line 1, 3 and 5.
6. Draw a curved pattern as shown on the images to get
the basic shape of the pipe branch.
7. Basic shape template for the pipe branch should have
an allowance for the feathering and overlap.

Equipment

1. Gores should cut to fit tank ends

2. Should start at the bottom for water
flow over the laps
3. Install end cap after bottom sections
the install top half to overlap end cap

2.3 Insulation serving as Fireproofing

Thermal insulation is also serve as passive fire

protection in some situations.

• Material: Pyrogel® XTF or ArmaGel

• Cladding: Stainless steels

2.4 Cold Insulation

These lines will intermittently operate at -196C and they required cold
service insulation to avoid ice balls formation.

Material:
• Cryogel Z

• Cellular Glass (Foamglass®, Pittsburgh Corning)

• Non-hardening butyl based sealer Pittseal 444N

3. INSPECTIONS

• Review and assess suitability of

Adhesive Jacketing and Tape
application.

• QC inspection during adhesive

jacketing and wrapped Aluminum
foil application.

Example:

• Thickness of the Pyrogel, as

specified before installation.
• Aluminum Jacketing is not torn,
damaged, or contaminated after
installation.
