Halloween History

Do you want to
hear a true story
about zombies?
Attack of the Dead Men
What Happened?
• In 1915 during the First World War, a group of Russian
soldiers were defending a fortress against German
troops in what is now Poland.
• The Germans wanted to take the fort so they planned
an attack.
• The Germans had at least 7000 men. The Russians
only had 900 men.
• Before attacking the fort, the Germans bombed it with
artillery killing many Russians.
• To add to this, they released poisonous gases (such as
chlorine) that got inside the fortress killing even more
Russians who had no protective equipment.
• Of the few men left, an officer decided to lead his
remaining men against the Germans in a last stand of
defiance. His name was Vladimir Karpovich
Kotlinsky.
The Dead Men
Attack
• Fearing no resistance, the Germans closed
in.
• To their absolute shock and HORROR,
Kotlinsky and no more than 100 men
emerged from the fortifications charging at
the Germans
• The Russians were coughing up blood and
lumps of their already disintegrating lungs.
Their flesh was also dissolving from the
gas.
• The Germans thought that they were
zombies and fled getting stuck in the
barbed wire of their own trenches.
• The Russians killed many of them and
won the battle.

Have you heard of Vlad the Impaler?
Who Was He?
• Vlad was a medieval prince based in
what is modern day Romania.
• He spent most of his life fighting
against the Ottomans, a Muslim
empire based in Turkey.
• He also struggled to maintain control
of his own principality.
• As a result he inflicted terrible
punishments on both his enemies and
his own people.
The Forest of
Corpses
• His most noted form of punishment was
impalement: the piercing of the body with a
stake.
• Vlad was greatly outnumbered by the
Ottomans regarding soldiers.
• The Ottomans were planning on invading
his territory with a massive army
• Using his immense cruelty he came up with
a way to fend off the Ottomans through fear
and HORROR.
• He had over 20,000 people (including
women and children) impaled along the
route the Ottomans took.
• Horrified and fearing what awaited them,
the Ottomans marched all the way back to
their capital, Istanbul.
