LESSON 3
Medium of Communication

 A medium of communication is a channel through which you can

transmit information to an individual or a group of people. The
medium can be one on one conversation, a telephone call or an
email message. Learning about the mediums of communication can
enable you to choose the right channel to share your message with
your audience. In this article, we define what is medium in
communication, discuss why they are important and explain some
prominent types of communication channels.
Different Mediums of Communicatons
Face to Face Communication
Face-to-face communication is a common form of workplace communication,
involving direct interaction between two or more people. It uses verbal and non-
verbal cues to convey messages, allowing listeners to receive information
instantly and respond. This method also allows for more effective participation in
discussions, allowing for more accurate interpretation of non-verbal cues.
Social Media
Social media communication connects an organization's customers with its products
and services, promoting advertisements and promotions. Platforms support visual
and audio-visual content, allowing users to interact in private or public chat
messages. Some organizations use social media for internal communication,
enhancing productivity, or organizing outreach programs with potential business
partners. Although less formal, social media can be a helpful way to communicate
with a large audience.
Written Communication
Written communication, such as notes, letters, or memos, is a medium used to
convey messages, either formal or informal, depending on the context. It offers
permanency, documentation, and is less vulnerable to misinterpretation. Written
information can be easily duplicated and presented in an engaging manner, making
it a useful tool for conveying long-term information to employees and ensuring
accurate and reliable communication.
Remote Communication
Remote communication utilizes technology to send messages to individuals or
groups, using various methods like email, video conferencing, phone calling,
and text messaging. It allows instant messaging to people anywhere in the
world, making it ideal for formal workplaces. Examples include video
conferencing for remote meetings and interviews, and teleconference calls for
job candidates.
