Introduction to
Transactional
Analysis
Transactional Analysis is a psychoanalytic theory
developed by Eric Berne in the 1950s.

It focuses on understanding human behavior and

relationships through the analysis of social transactions.

The theory provides a framework for personal growth

and effective communication.

Self
Awareness
The Johari Window improves self-
awareness and mutual
understanding between individuals
within a group. It is particularly
helpful for leaders who want to
understand how people perceive
them.
Ego states

Transactional Analysis identifies three ego states:

Parent, Adult, and Child.

The Parent ego state is influenced by parental

figures and represents learned behaviors and
values.

The Adult ego state is rational and objective, making

decisions based on facts and information.
Analysis of
Transactions
Transactions are social interactions between
individuals.

They can be complementary, where the ego

states of both parties are in alignment.

Transactions can also be crossed, where the

ego states of the parties are not in alignment.
Script
Script refers to the life plan we create for
ourselves based on early decisions and
experiences.

It influences our behaviors, choices, and

interactions with others.

Transactional Analysis aims to help

individuals rewrite their life script for personal
growth and fulfillment.

Games
Games are repetitive patterns of behavior
that serve hidden psychological purposes.

They often involve ulterior transactions

and are played to gain a desired outcome.

Recognizing and understanding games

can lead to healthier and more authentic
interactions.
Life Positions
Transactional Analysis identifies four life
positions: I'm OK, You're OK; I'm OK, You're
not OK; I'm not OK, You're OK; and I'm not
OK, You're not OK.

These life positions influence our

perceptions and interactions with others.

The goal is to strive for an "I'm OK, You're

OK" life position for healthy relationships.
