Introduction:
1. North America is the third largest continent in the world.
2. North America has diverse natural vegetation to its different climatic
conditions.
3. The continent of North America has great area forest.

Objective:
4. To study the different types of vegetation found in North America.
5. To understand their characteristics.
Methodology :

This paper is basically based on secondary data collected

from different books and some of the relevant information
has been collected by searching internet.
Analysis :
1. The natural vegetation largely depends on climate soil and the relief
features.
2. The great variety of climates has resulted in a great variety of vegetation
in North America.
They are-
i. Tundra vegetation
ii. Coniferous Forest
iii. Deciduous Forest
iv. Desert vegetation
v. Mediterranean vegetation
vi. Mountain vegetation
vii. Temperate Grassland
viii.Tropical Pain Forest
I. Tundra Vegetation :

a) In the northern part of Canada this

type of vegetation is found.
b) In the Tundra region, full size tree will
not grow but the brief summer sees it
bursting into life.
c) Grasses and sedges, mosses and
lichens trees along with various small
flowers such as saxifrages ovens and
artic pappies are grown.
II. Coniferous forest :

a) Found in areas that has long winters

and moderate to high annual
precipitation ,mainly in northern and
western parts .
b) They are core –bearing needle leaued
or scale –leaved evergreen trees and
grow in heights in norther and
western parts.
c) Redwood, Douglas fir, western red
cedar, sequence, pines, larches etc.
d) This forest is also know as’ Taiga
Forest’.
III. Deciduous Forest :

a) The forests of eastern parts of

America are mainly deciduous.
b) Like- maple, beech, elm and white
qab.
c) In the drier island, the grassland and
replaces forest, whereas in the dry
deeper basis, the grassland changes
to mesquite bush and sage bush.
IV. Desert Vegetation :

a) In North America, desert vegetation

can be seen North Mexico and
Arizona.
b) These hot desert lie on the back of
the Horse Latitudes or the Sub-
Tropical High- pressure Belt.
c) Low rainfall and devoid of vegetation
are the major characteristics of this
type of vegetation.
V. Mediterranean Vegetation :

a) This type of vegetation is located on

the west of California.
b) This trees of this region are small with
shining leaves and hard step.
c) Olive, cork, myrtle and oaks are the
main trees found here along with
Fruit tree like Oranges, Grapes,
Apricots.
VI. Mountain vegetation :

a) Mountain forests are found on the Rocky

Cordilleras. Here the form and nature of
vegetation varies according to aspect,
altitude and latitude. Forests range from
sub-tropical mixed forest to alpine forest
and meadows up to show line.
VII. Temperate Grassland :
a) The temperate grassland of North
America are called as Prairies.
b) Low rainfall and treeless with vast
grassland are the major
characteristics of this type of
vegetation.
c) Temperate grassland vegetation is
found in the plains between the
Rockies on the west and great lakes
on the east.
VIII. Tropical Rainforest :

a) Tropical rainforest vegetation is found in

the USA and Florida Gulf Coast.
b) The region experiences heavy rainfall with
a dense evergreen forest of hardwood
trees.
c) Tonga's National Forest in southeast
Alaska is the largest tropical rainforest of
North America, covering around 16.9
million acres of land area.
Conclusions :

Approximately the continent has 30 % forest cover. Forest are dominant in the
humid regions due to copious rainfall and thus once about two thirds of North
America .The rest one – third is continents dryland comprising
grassland ,scruple ,desert vegetation on tundra. There are different vegetation
in North America. Wood has been an abradant material in the development of
conduced USA. Even now the USA cut more wood each year than any other
country in the world.
