GRAMMAR FOCUS : THE PRESENT
PERFECT TENSE
Do you still remember the present perfect tense ? It represents time that
began in the past and extends to the present, either in actual fact or in the
mind of the speaker.
Note : The present perfect tense is not used with definite time words like
yesterday, last year, etc, but with since, for, so far, up to now, just, already,
and recently.
Time Words That Express Past-to-present Time :
A. SINCE, FOR
Example:
- Wira has lived in that house for almost sixty years now.
- Ina’s English has improved since she joined the English course at Harvard
University.

B. SO FAR, UP TO NOW
Example:
- I have had no problem with physics so far.
- Up to now, he has been a good student.

C. ALWAYS, NEVER, EVER,OFTEN, SOMETIMES, OCCASIONALLY


Example:
- I have always wanted to study business.
- This is the most difficult subject I have ever studied.
- I have never taught English before.
D. ALREADY, YET,FINALLY
Example:
- I have already read his letter, but I haven’t read yours yet.
- Father has finally made up his mind about the job offer.

E. JUST, RECENTLY, LATELY ( time is very close to the present )


Example:
- My grandmother has just joined a Japanese course.
- Scientists have recently unearthed evidence that infants as young as two days old
are able to distinguish their mother’s voice from that of others.
USING THE PRESENT TENSE IN
SENTENCES
