HUNGER
-Hunger happens when people do not have
enough food to eat.
-The main cause of hunger is not a collective
shortage of food but rather access to food –
especially nutritious food.
MALNUTRITION
-Refers to deficiency, excesses and
imbalances in a person’s intake of energy
and nutrients.
-The term malnutrition covers two broad
groups of conditions:
MALNUTRITION
“Undernutrition” - denotes insufficient intake of
energy and nutrients to meet an individual's needs to
maintain good health.
“Overnutrition” - a form of malnutrition (imbalanced
nutrition) arising from excessive intake of nutrients,
leading to accumulation of body fat that impairs
health.
DepEd Order No. 39, s.2017 or School Based Feeding
Program

School-Based Feeding Program is designed or


implemented by the Department of Education through
the Bureau of Learners Support Services-School
Health Division (BLSS-SHD) to address under
nutrition among public school children for the School
Year 2017- 2022.
Policy Statement
A. The program aims to contribute to the improvement of
classroom attendance of target beneficiaries to more than 85%
per annum.
B. The program also aims to do the following:
1. Provide feeding to learners, prioritizing the SW and W;
2. Improve the nutritional status of the SW and W learners at
the end of 120 feeding days:

3. Ensure 100% deworming of target beneficiaries prior to
the feeding activity, conduct group daily hand washing
and tooth brushing activities as stipulated in DepEd Order
No. 10, s. 2016, to impart development of positive health-
promoting values and behaviors;

4. Promote health and nutrition information and awareness
among target beneficiaries through the K to 12 Curriculum
and its alternative modalities of education, and
5. Encourage Gulayan sa Paaralan Program and backyard
vegetable gardening to augment the feeding program and to
complement the nutrition and poverty reduction initiatives of
the Government.
Other benefits of school based feeding programs:

•Increase the cognitive function and academic performance of


the learners
•Improves the school enrollment and attendance
•Prevent overweight and obesity
•Provides support to children’s parents and guardians
•Helps the community rise above poverty
Eligible Activities
NUTRITIONAL ASSESSMENT AND IDENTIFICATION OF
BENEFICIARIES
A. All school are expected to conduct nutritional assessment of Kinder to
Grade 6 students
B. Each school is expected to identify and submit to the SDO the following;
•Names of SW and W students with data on nutrition
profile.
•Location of school, name and number of School
Head anda uthorized personnelu supervisor, so on and so forth.

• The SW shall be segregated from the W students.
ORIENTATION OF PROGRAM IMPLEMENTERS
A. SDO's through the TWG, shall conduct an orientation
among School Heads and Teachers using Operational
Guidelines.
B. Schools shall conduct orientation and consultative meeting
among the school personnel, day care workers, barangay
officials, organizations of the community, parents and other
stakeholders before program implementation.

WHAT IS DEPED WASH IN
SCHOOLS?
A school-based programs that promotes correct hygiene
and sanitation practices through hygiene and sanitation
education and the provision of standards for safe water
supply and appropriate sanitation facilities.
Proper sanitation facilities (for example, toilets and
latrines) promote health because they allow people
to dispose of their waste appropriately, preventing
contamination of their environment and reducing
risk to themselves and their neighbors.

THE DEPED WASH IN SCHOOL (WINS)
POLICY
The WinS Policy or DepEd Order No. 10, s. 2016 titled Policy
and Guidelines for the Comprehensive for the Comprehensive
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene in Schools (WinS) Program was
issued 19 February, 2016. It was presented by Secretary Armin
Luistro at the 2016 Presidential Conference of WASH in Schools
in Pasay City on the 18th of March 2016
