Rizal wrote a 4 stanza poem in 1876 comparing the relationship between education and religion to an ivy vine and elm tree. The poem stresses that education without religion is incomplete, and religion without education serves no purpose. Rizal believed there was an "intimate alliance" between the two, and that with religion nourishing education, it would lead to virtue, goodness, and benefits for society. The poem also states that without religion, education risks descending into chaos, but with religion's guidance and teachings, education can flourish and bear fruit for humanity.

GOOD EDUCATION Presented by: Althea Marrie V. Tumbiga BSED FILIPINO 2-B • In 1876, at Ateneo de Manila where Rizal was a boarding student, he started writing poems on various topics: wars, childhood, memories, education, and religion. • Rizal wrote this poem on April 1,1876, the summer before entering his fifth year, as per information given by Father Sanchez to R. Guerrero. • This is 4 stanza poem that correlates education to religion. • Education without religion is not education at all. Same with religion. Religion without education is pointless. • Intimacy or Intimate generally refers to the feeling of being close personal association and belonging together. It is a familiar and very close affective connection with another as a result of a bond that is formed through knowledge and experience of the other. ORIGINAL SPANISH TEXT “ ALIANZA INTIMA ENTRE LA RELIGION Y LA BUENA EDUCACION” As the climbing ivy over lofty elm Creeps tortuously, together the adornment Of the verdant plain, embellishing Each other and together growing, But should the kindly elm refuse its aid The ivy would important and friendless whither So is Education to Religion By spiritual alliance bound Through Religion, Education gains renown, and Woe to the impious mind that blindly spurning The sapient teachings of religion, this Unpolluted fountain-head forsakes. • Rizal compared the relationship of Education and Religion to an IVY and ELM TREE, wherein the existence of one is essential to the other. • IVY- Education and ELM TREE- Religion • “Embellishing each other and together growing” • Embellish- to make something more attractive “but should the kindly elm refuse its aid, the ivy would impotent and friendless wither” • GOD- source of all good • Rizal believed that “Education without God is not true education” • Rizal shared his thought about the importance of education to enlighten the nation which was useful to gain societal freedom for every nation. It may also provide us the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to expand. • Rizal thought that there was really an intimate alliance between religion and good education. A man who was properly educated needed to apply what he learned on spiritual view rather than simply on material achievements. • The result of good education always fulfilled a growing uprightness and valuable virtue within the bounce of spiritual and moral dimensions. As the sprout, growing from the pompous vine, Proudly offers us its honeyed clusters While the generous and loving sarment Feeds its roots so the fresh’ning waters Of celestial virtue give new life To Education true, shedding On it warmth and light; because of them The vine smells sweet and gives delicious fruit • With religion, education will lead to a greener pasture and produce sweet results. • Rizal showed also be growing dignified fulfillment and application to the teachings of religion, just like a vine which continually grow that would someday the fruit will become sweet and delicious. • After all the sacrifices and difficulties in studying, it will lead and give us a bountiful harvest and success in life. – it takes time to grow and learn but soon we get to harvest the fruits of our hardship all theses will all be worth it. Without Religion, Human Education Is like unto a vessel struck by winds Which, sore beset, is of its helm deprived By the roaring blows and buffets wields His power until he proudly sends her down Into the deep abysses of the angered sea. • Without religion, education is like a vessel lost in a stormy sea. • Without religion, human education may result to chaos and disorder in any civilized nation because people may no longer value freedom, respect, dignity and other good virtues that maintain societal order. • It may result to a natural disaster just as the angered sea, which characterized the fierce winds that may, wrecked the vessel in the deep abysses. As heaven’s dew the meadow feeds and strength So that blooming flowers all the earth Embroider in the days of spring; so also If Religion holy nourishes Education with its doctrines, Shall walk in joy and generosity Toward the Good, and everywhere bestow The fragrant and luxuriant fruits of virtue • With the help of religion, education will eventually lead to goodness and virtue. • Rizal knew that religion had a profound effect to education, the educated must internalized the virtue of incorruptible life based on the ethical and moral standard of the society. • Dew- truth • Truth strengthens and nourishes a persons education “if religion holy nourishes education with its doctrines, she shall walk in joy and generosity toward the good” with the aid of religion, education will be used for the common good, and not only will you gain knowledge, you will also gain virtues. • In this poem, Rizal stressed the importance of religion to education. To him, education without God cannot be considered as true education. • As implied in the poem, religions serves as a guide and nourishment to education, and with the aid of religion, education will result to not intellectual but also spiritual enlightenment. • Also, Rizal shared his thought about the importance of education to enlighten the nation which was useful to gain societal freedom for every nation. • It may also provide us the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude to expand the horizon of our thoughts. However, this would not be enough to be properly educated. Rizal thought that there was really an intimate alliance between religion and good education. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS!!!
